New discovery on 6th Gen Auto tranny!

Not sure if anyone has done this but:

If you switch to manual shift on the automatic and actually hold the shift down(-) the engine will go ALL THE WAY TO REDLINE AND WILL NOT SHIFT! I was amazed. Try this at your own risk.

That's cool! So you just hold it down for a second or two, then the gear will hold indefinitely? I wonder if it would actually stall the car if you're geared too high and slowing to a stop...?

You hold the shift down(-) for as long as you want. The rev limiter will kick in at about 6500 rpms, maybe a little more. Let the shifter go and it will kick to the next gear. 3rd gear may get a little extra power when you do it in 2nd. I haven't done it in 3rd yet cause I discovered it on a service road, too much traffic and lights to redline it in 3rd.

Funny thing, I discovered it with my girl in the car. Needless to say, I was a little worried.

Oh yeah, my AEM intake sounds sick when I bang the redline.

No no no, I'm not talking downshifting

Say you're at a stop. Accelerate with the shifter pulled down(-) and the car will go all the way to redline and won't shift. Let go and it will kick to 2nd. Pull back and hold again quickly and the car won't downshift. You can do this all the way to redline!

well, I found out 2 more things.

1: hold the gear down too long (into red) and the limiter kicks in feeling like the gov.

2: we can also hold the gear up. so you can stay in 2nd gear at stops

I experimented w/ it this evening. Yep it does work but I don't know that it really benfits in any way. The car is so slow to react when you let go of the shifter, you can't seem to release it at just the right spot w/o hitting the rev limiter. Maybe w/ some more practice and a close eye on the tach you could figure out exactly where to let go. Like some one said, your much more likely to hit it just right in the taller gears where you have more time to react.

Cool discovery though!

I doubt it... that's why there's a slight lag, so the car doesn't jump into the next gear. I tried this today and it definitely doesn't jerk into the next gear, it just flows into it as it does from high RPM.

It will sit there, all happy at 6500 though... WOT in 2nd gear the Berk sounds insane... 3rd gear you're going entirely too fast unless you have a lot of road in front of you. I'm comfortable driving with one hand, but not in the rain at night and with the car screaming flying down the highway... maybe some other time...

New Update:

While accelerating hold the shifter down and when you hit the rev limiter then upshift. Time it perfectly and you will get an added boost when shifting to higher gears. I'm ready to race that G35 coupe again ;-)

I'm wondering now, if we hold the shifter up while in top gear (5th) will it allow us to go faster then our current believed top speed of 145?!

It doesnt make you faster when you hit the rev limiter.

Nobody takes into account gearing and RPMs when you're talking about acceleration and actually racing someone. It's way more complex than just looking at torque and horsepower. One of the true tests is experimentation. And I will tell you if you hold the shifter past where the tranny will auto shift and then upshift you will defintely notice an improvement.

There are a few of us that do actually.

Tapping the rev limiter will hurt acceleration.

Shifting right on time, just before the rev limiter is hit will be best.

Holy Crap!!! Is That Friggin" Cool Or What!!!

now the downside...

I installed the AT grounding kit to reap the benefits of improved gas milage. Yesterday I burned 1/4+ tank of gas playing with the auto stick on the highway...

It lurched because you nailed the rev limiter. Dont be scared to try again, just try and avoid the limiter.

I downshift for passing power, and when the revs reach 5k rpm I hold the stick back to hold the ****, then let go at 7k rpms and

I guess the shift is coming at the high point of the power curve because the acceleration is strong throughout the changes. I had a 89+- supra try to keep up...ubt failed miserably

Exactly!
I held my car in 2nd to redline and then upshifted. I only dropped down to about 5500 rpms. It was so sweet!.
