I wonder if the 7th gen will come with CVT or even hybrid (like 2007 Altima)?

Hey guys,

I was checking out Edmunds.com earlier (just saw the new Pontiac Solstice on "The Apprentice" so I had to check it out against the Z, etc...), and happened to stumble upon the "Future Vehicles" section on the 2007 Nissan Altima. They say that it will use Toyota's hybrid tech (using Nissan-built engine and electric motor), and it will have a CVT:

http://www.edmunds.com/future/2007/n...num2.2.nissan*

I think that the majority of the people who buy a Max probably aren't looking for a hybrid, but I would think that the CVT would be neat.

The CVT is cool for awhile but it tends to get old.. We have one in our Murano and its not really all its cracked up to be. My wife was looking at the new Pathfinder the other day while the MO got an oil change and she looked at me and asked if this one switched gears... It was kinda funny

CVT = continusouly variable transmission. This means that it doesn't have any traditional 'gears', but rather shifts gradually... and can thus track the most optimum point on th engine's power curve (either for fuel economy of performance, although I think most (all?) manufacturers go for fuel economy). Also, many CVT designs can't handle a lot of torque; I think Nissan's can handle about the most, although Audi's is pretty good too. A 3.5L engine is about the upper limit (so far); that is why the Ford 500's engine isn't as powerful.

Oh yeah - it's smooth too, so now shift shudder (like some of us have...).

This is the toughest time I ever remember for trying to predict what will happen with the next gen.

The problem of 'big oil' getting much richer, with record profits everywhere (It was announced today that this year's compensation package for the CEO of Exxon-Mobil is an obscene $38,000,000) has to be causing tremendous heartache for all the automotive planners.

All makes will have to begin planning (if they haven't already done so) for both hybrids and more fuel-efficient vehicles. This is a 'doable' thing with smaller cars, or more generalized vehicles. But for niche cars and either prestige or semi-prestige and performance cars, this is a very sticky situation.

Should the planners miss their guess, it could result in the death of the vehicle involved. I would not be surprised to see a CVT option in the 7th gen. In fact, CVT might even be standard on all 7th gen Maximas. (edit - except the 6 sp manuals)

I could be wrong, but I would guess Nissan is not ready to take a chance on converting the Maxima to a hybrid. I also do not feel it would be economically viable to offer a hybrid option on a limited number of Maximas.

Of course, a lot also depends on whether gas prices continue to soar, and whether the economy continues this sluggish wallowing. With no refineries having been built since 1976, and China grabbing ever increasing shares of the world oil supply, I am resigned to high gasoline prices for the indefinite future.

One other factor is what Nissan's competitors are doing. For instance, Nissan can't let the TL totally upstage the Maxima.

We are living in an era of flux and uncertainty. The plans for the 7th gen could change a dozen times between now and late 2006, at which time Nissan must lock in the 7th gen and begin letting subcontracts for parts in preparation for converting the assembly line to a redesigned 2008 Maxima by summer of 2007.

Its funny, my CVT dosent get any better gas mileage than my Max... And I know we both drive fast. I did however put a K&N dropin filter and removed the center muffler on the Murano and it helped quite a bit. Its funny driving something that dosent shift but sounds like a G35

I knew Nissan was working w/ Toyo on hybrids... but I doubt the Max will see one before 8th gen. before the max I thought down the road my first new car would be a hybrid... but well you know. why gas, i've considered still getting one or a Sentra when I have the means for simple commutes. Alti Hybrid i think it will do well. I recall reading an article about a future Toyo Hybrid.. here http://www.toyota.com/vehicles/future/volta.html

Yeah, I've also been intrigued by hybrids, but I ended up with a Max. Even then, I don't think my MPG is *that* bad.

Cool car though, nice specs...

The Nissan Teana which is the Japanese market version of the Maxima is already fitted with the Cvt , all reports indicate it is going great, there was some concerns about Cvts and engin displacements over 2 lts but they solved it with a continious steel belt.

I really didn't like CVT on murano. My sister has 04 murano and I drive it around quite often. i say, CVTs are for granny style drivers. It's smooth
on mild acceleration(cuz there's no gear changing). If you step on it, CVT
acts like it doesn't know what to do...

I think max's 5 spd auto tranny is alot better than the CVT...at least for me.

My friend told me that the Max was gonna have 400 hp, AWD and an 8 speed auto stick and it comes with an onboard hoe to give you oral while you drive. Do you know where I can get one or a link to it. Thanks.

Yes, but unlike him, I am aware of Rule #1- Read the Stickies. Rule #2, read prior posts to check if the topic was already covered. Rule #3, that a search can only be done by donating members. And besides, my post was funny.

I do feel the Maxima will eventually either go to AWD, or at least have AWD as an option.

The earliest I could see the Maxima introducing AWD would be generation 7, which it now seems may be the '09 model, which may be released in spring of 2008.

But when we reflect on the 'could' 'would' 'seems' 'may' content of the above sentence, we realize this is purely conjecture.

I also feel there will be a gradual, but continual conversion to AWS (All Wheel Steering) by most vehicles. The Jeep (mentioned earlier in this thread) is not the only vehicle already with four wheel steering.

Driving a car with four wheel steering is different than driving a car with two wheel steering. I'm not sure I would want the four wheel steering active at speed. The very radical abruptness and sharpness of AWS turns at speed could get a driver experienced with two wheel steering in trouble very quickly.

The answer may be to allow the AWS to operate only at lower speeds.

Next Maxima getting Interior Upgrade, All new Altima to be debuted.

From "http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/autos/story/3094579p-3589163c.html"

"Being billed as 2007 models, the Maxima gets a much nicer interior, and there will be an all-new Altima, which will include the first of the automaker's hybrids (Nissan is giving little away at this point, although it was smart enough to license Toyota's hybrid system, so the Altima Hybrid will hit the road running)."

This fits in nicely with why Nissan left the Maxima style the same for the '06 model year.

With very minor adjustments to the front and rear appearance (just enough to differentiate the '07 from the '06), addition of the system which gives dash readout of tire pressures (required by law in '07), and a big interior improvement, the 6th gen Maxima is good for another two model years.

That would mean generation 7 may arrive in spring of '08 as an '09.

But this is trying to read Nissan's mind; very risky.

"The Versa is one of many enhancements to Nissan’s 2007 car lineup, which will include an all-new Sentra, all-new Altima and enhanced Maxima." from nissannews.com. The 07 Max will probably come out around in mid to early 06, much like the 05 altima did in its time. I suspect Nissan will add LED lighting to the rear tails, slightly improved and redesigned headlamps, minor mods to the front and rear bumpers, Minor body scupling/hood/grill updates, and a completely revamped console and interior. Thats just my 2cents, well see what happens.

Possible, but I'm thinkin' more probable that the "all new" '07 Altima or Sentra will be launched in early/mid '06 rather than the slightly enhanced '07 Max. I'd be surprised if Nissan launched more that one '07 model in early '06. But of course JMO.

I'm with Mike_TX on this.

I would feel the CVT would be fine in many vehicles, but it just is not in keeping with the Maxima's image. But I think I read where Nissan plans to have 40% (IIRC) of their vehicles with CVT in the near future.

Actually, I understand the CVT Nissan is using in the Murano has been pretty reliable. Nissan uses them in trucks in Japan. I'm just not ready to go to a 'shiftless' tranny. Old fashioned, I guess.

Wow...looks like another 2 years for the 6th gen. 2007+08 MYs. This means that the 7th gen will appear in the Spring of 2007. 5 model years and 4 anual years after the 6th gen began.
