Painted Headlight Mod

Alright guys i have been working on an update to the Painted Headlight Mod for a while. School is keeping me from finishing this earlier than i would like. But slowly i have been compiling steps to do this mod easier than what is in the sticky, or add steps that are very important. In no way am i complaining about the Sticky. It was utilized for me to do all that i did, but there are a few things that i thought might need to be put in the Sticky. I will be contacting the Moderators to adjust this, and is an effort of the original poster DeusExMaxima, and myself to help those who would like to do this themselves. Here is a few pics to start out. The rest will be posted on my Cardomain site. http://www.cardomain.com/id/hemi2003red

In the third pic you can see my (mess), and the SILVERBULBS, for the turn signals i got from http://www.xenonmods.com/silverbulbs
These are clear while off, and turn amber when lit.

I really wanted to cover up the nasty amber reflectors, but wanted to keep it legal justin case. I was going to cover them up with some vinyl from the same guy that does it for those that have it on the outside. Once i close these puppies up, Thats it.. dont really want to poop them open again... After painting them you really need to let the paint settle, and Breath, because the vapors from the paint can cause them to fog up the inside of the housing. Oh and i had one 04 headlight and one 05 headlight, and the material in the plastic used is a bit different. the 05 headlight was VERY, VERY difficult to paint. It had Fish-Eyes in the process, and they(pros) had to keep at it and use a more expensive materials for it to take hold. you might NOT have this issue, but be aware that you can have probs, and it is best to let them sit out (in the sun/Dry Area)... I will let you know about the full process as soon as i get them put back together, fully documented WITH PICS... Later...

LOL... I work nights, so i am up all night (CST).. Work 7p to 7a.. Friday-Everyother Monday. This is my off Monday week, and i start school again Tuesday. ARG!! I am 31, and sleep very little.. I got that from being based on Submarines for 5 years(NAVY).. Even though its been close to 6 years since my getting out of the Navy, it never gets old.. I still wake up right before my alarm goes off, and stare at the clock... Oh, well..

Yeah, then i have to turn my schedule around so i can go to school during the week in the morning. People ask me all the time how i can do that, but its natural to me. On a Sub, you dont know what time of the day it is, unless you go to the mess hall, and find out what they are cooking.

ON TOPIC: I will have updated pics in about 1-3 weeks. So be patient guys. And, thanks for the props.. Later..

It is actually NOT that hard. Just scary if you have never done this. Just gotta take it REALLY SLOW... I broke one bolt tab on one of my lights when i was trying to pull it apart.. Forgot that when the plastic is heated that a little pressure might break something, and it did. I will be writting up (WITH PICS) every step, every screw and items you will need. So that others can hopefully do this themselves. I think the most difficult thing to do is the painting process. If i had done this myself, i might have ruined it. It cost me a bit, about 110 for the painting, but as you can see the outcome was pretty neat. The 2005, headlight piece was very difficult, and i went up there twice to see it myself. the paint Fish Eyed, which is a process that is with the material used in the plastic, not being able to take hold on the paint or bonding with it. sometimes plastics have an oils that are in its make up or even the oils from your fingures can harm the process during bonding.

thats why i went to a pro.. Again if you want to do this yourself, be aware of what can happen. Plus the paint that was used in my process was not cheap. Hince the higher price. they only charged me for the product and not labor.. These guys are awesome. they even did work on on one of the original James Bond Cars tht was in the Movie (forgot which one).. had a pic loaded on another site, but cant find it.. Its at home though. these guys work on Labo's and all kinds of high end cars. A small shop, in Old Lewisville, TX.. 4M Body Works is the Co. name. Guys really do a great job, and have done all my paint work with other vehicles i have owned.

Again, thanks for the props, and i will inform you guys as soon as i have done more... LAter...

He's right, it isnt THAT hard. U just have to be very careful. My lights fogged up some but its because I didnt give it a chance to dry. Anyone know of a way to clean off the fog without opening them up? I love this mod. It really makes the max look sooooooooooo much better. Id love to see a Red Op max paint the lights Red Op!!! Eh Chern?????

Deus, if i had that problem, i would take them off and use a Hair dryer to dry it out... If you are still having probs, then it must be a leak when you put them back together. hince my update in the process when putting them back together. adding some epoxy to help it out. Also make sure you put back in those desicant packs which will cut down in moisture. they were located behind the HID igniter/ballast. One of mine had 2.. Plus if you added the HID Fogs and had to modify your Fog Cover, you might want to check there as well.. Needs to be a good seal.

I am still debating if i really want to install my HID Fogs as well... Seems difficult to do, as in placement of the rest of the equipment, and if things go wrong then i would have to remove the bumper again...or take it somewhere to get it done, which i have to do at this time, since i dont have a place to do it myself, or time. ARG!!

I would have gone with white too but im sure black looks great. Its not moisture thats fogging them. I think its haze from paint fumes. Not sure how to remove that haze. I did put desicant in and I feel confident that its sealed.

Dues i would still try the hair dryer to see if you can air it out... Guys the reason i didnt go white is because i will be painting the top of my car in the future, BLACK.. It wont be for a long while, but itll stil look good with the white car with black accent. I think it will look sik..and its different, unique.. Which is how i like it.. As soon as the rest of the Body Kit from REDLINE comes out i will be adding that, and the NEW S4.1 Grille, which i have been waiting on for forever, like the rest of you.. My rims will be Black/Chrome Lip, and interior will be black suede, with silver/grey and black accents throughout... Its a keeper... If you saw my last vehicle, it was one of a kind with all that i added.. Including a #12/200 Functional Six/Pack Carbon Fiber Hood and front carbon fiber grille for my Dodge HEMI/Single Cab. From http://www.hambekcustoms.com ...if you go there,a nd wait for a bit, you can see a red truck pic pop up, my name michael taylor that is underneath it.. spent about 1500 for it... Really well made.. Really miss my truck.. If you goto: http://www.texasheatwaveshow.com and look for the pics for the July Summer HeatWave in Austin, i was in that show. Look for the Red HEMI, with that hood... I will be going every year to this event.. And i am telling you it is the best car/truck show in the world...

Direct link to my truck pics...

Here is one pic, an ohh, black interior headlight, wonder where i got the original idea.. LOL

Later guys..

thanks.. I recomend anyone doing this project to TAKE YOUR TIME.. You want to make sure you dont forget any step, and have time for it to cure. Leaving it in the sun, while having it sealed off to see if it fogs up. Want to make sure it doesnt do that BEFORE puttng back on your car. Putting them back together was the most difficult part. It all has to do with a PROPER SEAL. Hopefully i did everything correctly enough that there will be no problems. Most likely i will not have any, because i took the time i mentioned above. This modification would be ALOT easier to those that have an extra set of lights. Extremely easier. Those of you that really wish to do this, i can walk you through STEP-BY-STEP, even after i post the new info for a walk-through there is info that you might want to know. Ask me anytime, or i can give you my cell #. either way i would enjoy helping a fellow MAX owner anytime of the day/night... It REALLY is an easy process, just a bit timid at times. Just got to be careful with it; the area around you is the most important step. I even found a silly way of making sure your interior is clean.. If you look closely at this pic you will see what i used.. Static builds up and is hard to remove calcium/dust from your lights, but this duster worked VERY WELL.. Even when i closed it up, i was able to put it through the back and go inside the light when i dropped the plug-in for the HID into the light, droping small dust particle inside the light housing and on the underside of the lense.. PERFECT. You do NOT want to use any type of chemicals inside the light housing. Not even soap, just hot CLEAN (bottled) water. USE MICRO FIBER CLOTHS, ONLY, and NEW if POSSIBLE. Shake them off really good to get most of the dust off, but you can use the duster to clear that off later. Oh, man here i go.. sorry... that is just a few things to help you with your process.. you can use your own methods, but these are just steps to help you if you fear what to do... Later guys..

oh yeah the windex you see in the pic is ONLY for the exterior.. and not used around it when it was open.

Baking them is one of the easiest things to do, it wont harm them at all.. As long as you dont leave them in there until they are mush.. lol... Hardest things to do is Painting, Waiting, and Putting them back together. At first i thought taking them apart would be harder.. NOT.. Putting them back together is a a bit tricky.. Not really all that hard, but still needs to be done correctly.. I wouldnt mind doing it again on someone elses. Locals are welcome, but i will charge a bit to do it.. Not much,..

LOL... i would love to do that for you, but it will cost you more since you live that far away.. shipping will cost you about 30-50 ONE WAY to PROPERLY ship them (and the same sending back), then painting cost will range 100-150, due to the fact the guys i used, used professional high end paints, and the work required for prep was a bit difficult (these are plastic pieces and thier makeup can cause probs, that will take multiple times to rework the paint). You can do the painting yourself, as DeusExMaxima did, but you really need to make sure you KNOW what you are doing.. You will be sealing these up, and you really dont want to open them up again becasue you rushed it.. My OFFER still stands though. I dont mind doing someone elses, but it will cost you a bit to do.. IT did me, for quality. so you can do it yourself and spend less (outcome varies) or have it painted professionally, and spend a few... IT took them 5-8 tires with one of them, on my 2005 light. For some reason the plastic didnt want to take hold of the paint. Fish Eyes, if you know what that is.. Bad, Bad buisness.. they had to use more expensive paints for it to hold. And These Guys Are Honest.. Done all my work..

doing it yourself, paint and all: $20-$40
taking it apart and having someone else paint, including extra supplies: $100-$160MAX again based on pro high end paint.
letting me do it: PRICELESS.. j/k.. couldnt help myslef..

If you are far away and want to let me do it, it will cost you. I do not paint these myself.. And i asked other paint Co. the other day what would they charge and it was a bit HIGH, due to the fact they were charging me for exteme labor.. IT is easier doing yourself.. Reall dont be scared, just TAKE YOUR TIME.. BE VERY PATIENT.. if not send them to me, but pay for it..

It really isnt too hard, but its true, you have to go SLOOOOOW and block out a lot of time. My only hitch was that I didnt let them dry long enough and I am getting some haze on the inside. It doesnt appear to be water and its not getting worse. I think I can take the headlights out and get a microfiber cloth in there to wipe it down. But its a great mod, epsecially on darker cars. I believe the best look is body color.

LOL... Yeah at first i was like.... Uummm do i need a fire extinguisher?? It is only 250 Degrees, and 20-30 (30 min recomended) to leave them in.. It not hot enough to burn that cloth i have in there.. I recomend a bath towel (what i used) thick cloth.. I cut off the tag(optional).. I used a cookie sheet. DO NOT PLACE LIGHT IN THERE WITH CARDBOARD, OR RIGHT ON THE COOKIE SHEET.. Had a friend how was a dummy, and burnt his headlight, and cardboard caught on fire.. I dont know how Deus did his without it getting close to catching.. (In his How2)... but if you ever had your oven on 250, it one of the lowest settings, so again its not that hot, BUT WILL STILL BURN YOU.. As for the headlights, they DO GET HOT, but i used 2 bath cloths to help me pry it open.. DO NOT USE ANYTHING TO STICK INTO THE HEADLIGHT TO PRY. That WILL mess up the natural seal. If you bend that plastic, it will form to the pressure you give it, even if a fraction.. Just watch the TABS.. I broke one.. ARG! @%$%%%^ #^#$# @@ @% %.. Ok, i am better.. hopefully my instruction will help those that attempt it yourself.. the headlights were hot like i was stating before, i didnt get any birns from it, just alot of hot potatoe 'ing it, and again being careful.. The Second light was easier sine i learned from the first.. The secret is really simple.. there are 2 small screws (hard to see/dark green) that run along the side of the headlight, that hold it on.. It screwed into the sealant, and into the headlight lense. sometimes you can remove it by a very small phillips screwdriver before heating it a bit, but if it difficult, do NOT strip it. Just warm it up for 10 min on 250 Degrees.. take out, and unscrew.. PUT BACK IN FOR 30 MIN, or like one of mine the sharp angle part of the headlight actually started to lift apart.. Take Out, BECARFUL, BE SLOW, dont burn yourself (easy if having 2 towels, or really good, NON ABRASIVE GLOVES), pry apart, and i used a long screw driver to just help seperate the sealant. Pull out ward , and try not to get any of that stuff on your headlight interior lense.. itll come off, but you will have to work it out.. Damn here i go again.. All this will be in the write up, i am just excited about the project and glad that i did it myself (well atleast everything except the painting).. LOL,,

No fear project, unless you are vertically challenged, and i am no cupcake myself friends. I could tell you how to plug in a light bulb sometimes.. Um, wait maybe that, but you get the picture.. I dont recomend being drunk while trying this either, your insurance premiums couldnt keep up, or someone elses ither... Take Care, and again i am here for any questions you might have... Later..

I believe the best look is body color.

Hey bro, i used a Swifter Duster to get the dust out of there.. Try that first... Open up and take out the HID Housing.. stick that baby up in it.. The swifter, is really good, and is a MUST for this project.. IT picks up everything.. Also, while you have it off, i recomend getting some RV BLACK type selant, like i used. Cut the tip to a small funnel, and put some in your gaps in the headlight.. this will help, if there really is a leak some where.. It might even be a small one, and thats why the fog/haze is taking a while to build up. even a minute amount will cause this./ AGAON WHY, it is impairative to leave time off to cure.. I am actually leaving mine out in the SUN, and spraying it with a water bottle (clean water).. I might be going out of my way to do this, but again i dont want to take these babies off again if i have too.. I put a fans BACK to the headlight back to help AIR OUT the interior of the headlight.. Paint fumes, and the sealant i used were inside the headlight, and i wanted to make sure it was "gased" out.. LOL,, i am a dummy.. again these steps might be extreme, but again....

I went to Walmart to get those micro fiber cloths for a bundle like a few $$$ if any.. LAter bro, and good luck..

Looks great, i knew it would on white.

i don't think waiting for the paint to "gas out" is at all extreme.
What about a CF hood??
