Mine is real leather. I used to work for Nissan North America and I still have friends on the "inside" and I have confirmed with them that the steering wheel cover, leather seat trim (the front of the seats that you sit on) and the tranny shifter are real leather in mine.

Not sure if they changed that on newer models (mine is an 04SL), or on lesser models (base SE).

HEY DEUS! That is one hell of a MAX you got there! I can only hope that mine looks as trick as yours if I ever start it! Before finding my max, I had an 04 Mazda RX8, anyway, it had a really sweet soft black leather steeling wheel, So I know what we're missin out on. But if you have to switch out the whole wheel...would you wanna give up the wheel controls?? HMMMMM....

I wouldnt wanna give up the heat and controls, so i think either swapping a NIssan or Infiniti wheel with our or wrapping ours in leather appear to be the only viable options. I think the Altima SE-R has real leather and it has our controls on it. Im looking into that.

nissan NEVER had REAL leather for seats... all synthetic 100% which sux and it's not getting any better in newer cars too.
shifter boot onthe other hand is kinda real, at least in 4th and 5th gen

sorry man but it is true. nissan could never afford real leather especially on the 6th gen maxima because all the manufactureers are now jsut trying to sell more cars and the qualtiy and the materials they use is whack.

The scratch across the bottom of my steering wheel says the material is leather. Of anyone that cannot afford leather I'd be looking at the domestics. Next thing we are gonna hear is that the carpeting isn't real polyester.

i am not goign to argue but maybe you shoudl read the thread. your the only one that says its real and everybody else says its fake. so hows that possible if yours has real leather and everybody else has fake? go get in a e36 m3 and open their owners manual and they say that their leather is real. nissan is too cheap to do that. end of story.

I just got back from the local Nissan dealer and I peeked in the 350Z and Maxima. The steering wheel covering appears to be leather in these becuase I could see the stitching. If you look around the perimeter of the steering wheel, there is a seam that runns perpendicular right about the 10 o clokc and 2 o clock position. On my steering wheel, there is no stitching there, but on the 2006 350Z and 2006 Maxima I looked at, the stitching is CLEARLY visible.

Conclusion? Well, to clear up the heat going on in prior posts here, maybe some Max's came with real leather and maybe some came with fake leather? Maybe the 2006's have real leather now? Who knows?

How easy would it be to have a 2006 steering wheel installed and how expensive would it be?

if the shape of the wheel is the same there shouldnt be any problem of swapping the wheel. but the question is how much will it run?

Nissan wanted to use real leather. Then they found out that the cows used to make the leather had MAD COW disease. They were protecting us Lol. I'm going to order a dna test on mine. Lol. I do wonder would a cover affect my heated steering wheel.

When I bought my Max there was a 2 inch slit cut in the rear seat and I could see the leather material plain as day. They replaced the leather seat cover, which they didn't want to do b/c it was a $1700 piece for just the bench seat portion, not including the backrest. I don't think pleather costs that much. I saw the piece before it was put on and I saw the underside of the material and it looked and felt like leather to me. My steering wheel is stitched and doesn't look fake at all as well as my auto shift ****. The seats and steering wheel of my 02 Acura TL were sold as leather but that was easy to tell it was a man made material. The seating/leather material that Nissan has put into my 04 Max is far better than my 02 TL. Count me as a vote for real leather. Now the brake boot.... thats another story.

Check the price for the 2005 OEM steering wheel here. They didn't have the price for the '06. Should be about the same price.

I'm not sure what the people posting here are talking about that are saying the steering wheel is not real leather wrapping. Mine is an 05 SE and it is indeed real leather with obvious stitching that is not even perfectly done. Also the wheel smells like leather and is a noticeable scent in the car even after 12 months now. I would not understand why Nissan would produce some Maxima's with and other without real leather. It just doesn't make any sense to me unless this was a change starting either before or after a specific manufacturing date. My car was produced in 11/04 and I purchased it from the dealer new 1-2005. Mine is basically a stock SE with cloth interior, traction control, etc. Can anyone confirm that some of the Maxima's out there have fake leather for real? I am 100% positive mine is real leather.

According to a 2004-05 Maxima PDF file Price List,

The 2005 5 passenger heated steering wheel in any color is $408.77

The 2005 5 passenger non-heated steering wheel in any color is $271.02

The labor seems to be .5 hrs.

The 2004 Steering wheel cost are a little higher, $436.29 with adaptive cruse control and 408.77 without. Strange, but the Frost color in the 2004 model year is $180.88 with adaptive cruse control and $183.02 without. 5Passanger seating in the 2004 model year is a single listing of $221.17.

There is no mention of leather or not leather.

Maybe it's a California thang. I know the material on my steering wheel seems to be leather and it has real stitching. Ditto shift **** and hand brake.
