Lower Sulfur Specs and no MTBE will Increase Gasoline Prices

Check out this thread on the Fluids & Lubes area of this site to see why gasoline prices will be increasing more than a few cents per gallon that it costs to reduce the sulfur level in gasoline. Turns out gasoline imports will be greatly reduced by these more stringent regulations.

See the Wall Street Journal article on restricted gasoline imports as post #4. My post #1 outlines the US Government specs on gasoline sulfur content.

How about 20 to 30 cents more per gallon due to the loss of imported gasoline? In Europe they drive many more cars and other personal vehicles with Diesel engines. Their refineries produce more gasoline than is sold in Europe and the surplus comes to the US because of our higher gasoline demand. This product will be lost for at least this summer. The US also imports gasoline from South America and they too will need time & investment to meet these tighter specs.

Less supply will likely cause gasoline prices to be higher by 20 to 30 cents/Gallon -- if not higher. Eventually (hopefully by summer of 07) this will all get sorted out and gasoline supply will be more in line with demand -- helping the price as well.
