Crack in my windshield!!
Crack in my windshield!!
We had a big snow storm here in CT last week. Before the snow, I parked my car in the driveway and drove my jeep for the next two days. After the two days, I got in the car to drive it and noticed that there was a long crack in my windshield starting from the left side going towards the middle! This is some BS man...I looked at the outside of the windshield and it seems that a pebble may have started the crack because there is a small indentation. I have gotten stuck driving behind some dump trucks during the last few months and have noticed my car being bombarded by pebbles almost everytime from the truck. Obviously I have to get the windshield replaced, any advice? Should I go through insurance or just pay for a company myself? Anyone know how much the windshield may cost average? Anything I should know about getting this done?
Your insurance should be able to cover it (premium insurance ofcourse). They will tell you before hand if insurance will raise or not. You probably already know this, if windshield is not installed properly the rubber lining will start to come off. I had mine replaced via a Nissan dealership locally and my Statefarm covered it. I told them that I was behind a truck when this happened. All paid by insurance except for $250 for deductible. This was on my 00 max.
I forgot to mention, my insurance company first offered to send a guy to my house and have the crack "sealed" so it doesn't grow anymore. I told them, I would like the crack removed not stopped since it was right in the middle of my driver viewing area so they called me back and accepted to replace the windshield. You might have to fight for that...
IMO, pay for replacement yourself. It should cost ~$300 and that is even less than your deductible. If you make a claim, it will be on your record for maybe 3 years. And the darn thing is, evenif you only call to inquire about the possibility of using the insurance, it gets on your record too (use it or NOT). That's what happened to me. I found out, 'cause a few years later it appeared on my record when I applied for insurance @ another company.
Here in southern CA, there are mobile people that can come to your work or home. My Pathfinder's windshield costs me $340 out-the-door. They warrantied the work. By the way, pick a day that it would be dry for the next couple of days. You're not supposed to get it wet for that long.
The dealer also warranty their work. But it doesn't mean they're good at doing this. These professional can be 100 times more experienced doing 100 times more of these replacements.
