So, addressing the third question:
As to the automatic moving of the seats forward/backward and the steering wheel up/down when entering or exiting the car, that function (among many others) can be turned off/on under one of the 'personal' settings on the regular screen (no 'navi' required). I turned that option on and off several times in my '04 without navi over two years ago.

it says nothing about it in the manual.. i really do not need exit/entrance feature, may be just the wheel to impress girls..lol.. and 45 second delay in shutting off headlight i refuse to understand.. what is the point?? to kill the battery?
thanks guys.. corner light are very nice..
P.S. And what's up with the gas? i have 11MPG average now. driving in city only. when will it brake in? 1000 miles? i'm driving like an 80year old grandfather untill it will brake in and I got 11MPG average.
bell - To set/reset any or all of your personal settings (and there are a lot of them, including the seat-exit, wheel-exit, headlight delay, etc, etc), I would go up to the last 'sticky' at the top of the 6th gen page.
That 'sticky' is entitled '6th Gen Maxima How To . . Specs & Info'.
Within that sticky, there are only two posts; the first is by bluemaxx and the second in by NismoMax80. Go to the second post (the one by NismoMax80), and skip down past 'Audio' and 'Maint' to the 'OEM Specs' entry.
Within the 'OEM Specs' section, go down to the 6th entry, entitled 'Personal Settings Menu'. You will find this entry to be an orderly progression through every personal setting we are allowed to change, and there are some interesting ones there. I think you will really enjoy doing this. I know I did.
As to your gas mileage, consider that if you sat at a traffic light all day, you would have used 20 gallons of gas and gone nowhere. City driving is usually not quite that bad (unless you are in Atlanta), but I never attach much importance to city gas mileage because conditions vary so widely.
City driving gas ratings assume stopping at lights, slowing for turns, etc, but if you are in really congested traffic where you do a lot of sitting or waiting, then 11MPG may be what you will get with a 3.5 liter engine.
If, however, you have several thousand miles on your Maxima (sort of 'broken in') and then get less than twenty-something MPG on an open road trip, then we have a problem of some sort.
As to the three settings on the mirror, I have been on this board for three and a half years, and have never seen that mentioned. I would guess it may be a position in which no electrical signal is being sent to the mirror motor, allowing the mechanics to safely disassemble the mirror. But we both know that is a wild guess. I really do not know.
In a few hours, I will be headed out of town for a four day road trip. I will play with the mirror switch during the trip and see if I can find an answer.
In the meantime, have fun with the personal settings!

There are folks here who would never touch a CVT, and will leave the 'world of Maxima' before buying one.
There are folks here who feel the CVT is the wave of the future, and offers the eventual promise of being the most efficient tranny ever built.
And there are those in between, who are very interested in how good and how reliable this CVT will be.
Everyone has their own opinion. But if I was going to drive my car in normal situations and in a normal manner, I would definitely opt for the CVT.
However, if I lived in a very mountainous area, or intended to drive very agressively, or have always loved shifting for myself, I would probably opt for the '06 6 speed, because we don't really have a long-term reliability record for the Maxima CVT as yet.

My thinking is that if I can really get the same drivetrain loss as a manual, and if the car is just as quick, the CVT doesn't worry me as much (even though I lose real shifting). That might be a tradeoff I'm willing to take since I'm getting older and do more and more while I'm driving, plus I tend to sit in DC traffic a lot these days. Bottom line for me is speed, fun, and convenience. A 6 speed always gives you 2 out of the 3 (speed and fun), and autos usually only give you 1 (convenience). If the CVT can give me 2 out of the three (speed and convenience), I think we have a contender.
maxhead - Your approach sounds logical for those who would like to stay with the Maxima family, CVT and all, *IF* (and this is an important 'if') the performance is still there.
We each have our 'needs'. I have seen several folks here talk about how pleased they were with the performance of their new 2007, so, being more of a 'touring' type driver, at this point I am concentrating on trying to find out if the reliability is there.
If the Maxima with CVT passes both the performance and reliability tests, I definitely plan to buy a 2009 7th gen Maxima when they come out in spring of 2008.
----------------
bell - I'm not sure where you get the idea that sticky is for Maximas with navis. I used that writeup to change all my personal settings, and I definitely DO NOT have the navi.
To have the 'memory/exit' options on the seat, steering wheel and mirrors, you must have the 'Driver Preferred' option package on your Maxima. If you do not have the 'Driver Preferred' package, you should still be able to change the other personal settings using the basic screen; just not the 'memory/exit' seat, steering wheel and mirror options.
But I must admit I'm not sure exactly what appears on the screen for Maximas without the Driver Preferred option. Someone here should be able to confirm the basic screen is still the way to change personal settings, even without the Driver Preferred option.
Anyone?

2007 Maxima is still a nice car but its finished in my opinion.
Where is the manual transmission?
Where are the extra horses?
Does Nissan offer that in a Maxima? NO.
And whats up with Altima getting more horses for 07 with a manual gear box?
Where does that leave the Maxima?
My fully loaded 2003 Polished Titanium is better in my eyes.
My Maxima is still Awsome. No reason for me to upgrade.
My relationship with the Maxima is over after this car.

bell - Did you catch the last half of my post at 8:28PM Oct 24th?
I'm sure the process for turning the exit/entry function on and off is the same for all Maximas equipped with the exit/entry option, with or without navi, and is done through the personal settings option on the basic screen.
I used the sticky I referenced earlier in this thread to change all my personal settings through the screen, and I definitely do not have navi.

Welcome aboard, sonomamax.
Be sure and continue to keep us informed of your experiences with the CVT. It seems the CVT will be the only tranny in the Maxima henceforth. I feel it will give very good performance, but it had better be reliable.

Bell, your question about the three position mirror switch is a bit confusing. I think you may be referring to the switch above the fold-back switch which serves two purposes. One, it selects which mirror to adjust when moving the adjustment rocker, and two, it selects which mirror to move downward when you shift the car to reverse. If you don't want either mirror to move downward, leave it in the center position.
I have about 3200 miles on my '07 Liquid Silver SL with the CVT. I'm in the Washington DC area so most of my driving is urban stop and go. I recently took a trip to Albany and Ithaca New York (my oldest is looking at colleges) and drove through the Pocono mountains and winding roads for close to 900 miles. I've never owned a Maxima, but I've been a driver of other cars for more than 30 years.
I think the CVT is a pleasure to drive; from the beltway to the highway and all the stop lights in between, the car performs beautifully. When I want to drive like a granny, the car will react nicely, keeping the RPMs down and staying perfectly quiet. When I feel the need, the engine tachs up, roars like a lion and hauls ***. With the CVT and computer control, the engine RPMS seem to always be in the sweet spot. One thing that has taken me some time to get used to is, under hard acceleration, the engine stays at a constant RPM while the speedometer keeps going higher. It's way too easy to hit 90 on the beltway while just relying on engine, tranny and road noise. I have to look at the speedo more often with this car.
As a side note, the CVT does have the 'Manual-Matic' mode for a clutchless 6 speed. I use it occasionally, but just for fun. I haven't pushed the RPMs much, so I don't know if it has built-in shift or down-shift points yet. Anybody tried that?
Oh, and by the way my trip computer says I get 19.5 mpg on premium fuel.

It will also drop back to 1st as you roll to a stop.
I've not pushed it hard enough to see if it forces an upshift at redline or just bumps the rev limiter.
Have had my 07 SL w/Bose no navi for about 5 months now - 4400 miles. my gas mileage hasn't been above 17 at any point
a combo of about 70% city and 30% highway so I'm a little disappointed there
something i noticed that's driving me crazy though - when you put the cd changer on 'mix' it's not working properly - or at least the same way that my 05 pathfinder and every other car works. normally on mix, you get to the end of a song and the cd player plays a random song for the next song - THAT works great. however if while on mix you hit forward to go to another song, it does NOT play a random song next, it plays the next chronological song on the cd. can anyone else verify this? i love having mp3 capability but listening to that many songs in the same order every time really sucks.
i can hook up my ipod via the aux in but then i can't control the songs via the head unit or steering wheel. my dealer tells me that the genuine nissan ipod adapter is not available yet for the 2007 maxima with no release date as of this time. even then they don't know if you can control the songs thru the head unit or steering wheel.
anyway - just venting about something very trivial but i can't understand why they changed it from my wife's pathfinder (which also plays mp3s).

a combo of about 70% city and 30% highway so I'm a little disappointed thereNow, at just under 7000, it is running just over 20 on average. Haven't seen it level off yet, though it is now approaching the same fuel mileage my '03 provided after it was broken in, under the same driving conditions.
I ran it down to FL and back at just about your mileage. At that point, it gave me about 23 for the all highway trip (80mph avg). Haven't done a sustained highway trip since.
You know I sarted a thread about how come nissan didnt redo the max like they seem to "re-do" the altima, commenting on how nice the new altima is. It got deleted for sme reason. If anyone gets a chance, its either the new road and track or motor trend, has pics of the new altima witha road test(i saw one on the road and the pics dont do it justice...this new altima is so freeeaaakin nice) not to mention it has 270hp compared to the max's 255...i just dont get it.
****** - Just as Nissan does not bring out a new generation of the Altima every year, neither do they bring out a new generation of the Maxima every year.
The '07 Altima is good-looking, but so was the 6th gen '04 Maxima when it came out in spring of '03. You are comparing the fourth year of the 6th gen Maxima with a beautifully redone Altima. That is an unfair and meaningless comparison.
In the new scheme of things, the Altima is Nissan's 'middle-of-the-road bread-and-butter' car, which they hope will sell around 250,000 per year. At such a volume, it may get a complete redo a little more often than the Maxima, which is moving upscale to a near-luxury level, with hopes of selling around 100,000 per year.
When the '09 Maxima comes out in spring of 2008, it will leap the Altima styling. Such is the way of things.

I completely understand the inner workings of cars and model years, but I have had an 97,01 and 04...and in my opionion the 07 just is not as refined and detail oriented as it should be for roughly 35k(pretty much loaded up). It should be a bit quicker and just some nicer materials used inside and out...and actually usually nissan changes models every three years..if you look at the difference between the 03 and 04 they are quite dramatic. I would expect Nissan to make the same changes(since it is the start of 4th year)on the 07. I loved my max and all of them actually, but I must say..if an altima can have 270 hp, and run to 60 in mid 5's..shouldnt the max be able to as well???? and the interior of the alitma is honestly nicer(fit and finish) without the tunnel guages etc,......honestly I would drive the 07 max before an 07 alitma, but to me It is only by a little bit, unlike before when I would say to myself I would never even consider driving an altima before a max. I just expect a little more from the model that is considered "the flagship" JMO

- Gen 2 (4 model year run):2.0: '85-'86
2.5: '87-'88 (wheels, front & rear fascia update) - Gen 3 (6 model year run):3.0: '89-'94 (DOHC powertrain added mid-cycle [92?] for SE)
- Gen 4 (5 model year run):4.0: '95-'96
4.5: '97-'99 (wheels, minor interior, front & rear fascia update) - Gen 5 (4 model year run):5.0: '00-'01
5.5: '02-'03 (wheels, minor interior, powertrain, front & rear fascia update) - Gen 6 (5 model year run):6.0: '04-'06
6.5: '07-'08 (wheels, major interior, powertrain, front & rear fascia update)
Other than being in the 4th year rather than the 3rd, the '07 refresh fits right into the same pattern that the '87, '92, '97 and '02 did. Its actually a pretty extensive mid-cycle update, especially considering that Nissan has been busy getting the all-new Versa, Sentra & Altima models out for '07. They will keep the showrooms busy for a while, too.
The Max will get its turn soon. The '09 may no longer fit the Max's traditional 4DSC image, but I'd be willing to bet that it WILL be very competitive wherever Nissan positions it in the marketplace. Less sporty maybe, but not Toyota/Honda bland.

We'll just have to wait and see The 7th gen, but I "heard" it won't disappoint.
jcalabria - Excellent generation delineation; I didn't see a single error. I did notice you began with gen 2.
Gen 1 was a four model year run ('81 thru '84). That first gen was rear wheel drive, and had an optional diesel engine. There was a 'freshening' midway in that four year run, also. The way to instantly tell the '81s and '82s from the 'freshened' '83s and '84s was the vertical hood ornament. For '81 and '82, it was rectangular. For '83 and '84, it was square.
When the completely redesigned '85 came out with front wheel drive and the big 3 liter engine from the 'Z' car (a big increase in power!), I actually wet my pants with excitement. The engine had to be turned sideways in order to fit within the engine compartment, making changing the oil filter an 'arm burning' experience (it was tucked up against the firewall).
I bought two matching silver '85s with all the options (leather, power sunroof, etc), one for my wife and one for myself. My wife drove hers for 17 years (!), and I drove mine for 206,000 miles (!). Still my very favorite car of 58 years of driving. I absolutely loved that car.
Of course I love my 2000 SE and my 2004 SL too. Both are giving me wonderful service, and are so much fun to drive.
I am very excited about the '09 Maxima we will see in spring of '08; that is only 16 or 17 months away, and I would bet we will begin seeing spy photos of the 7th gen within the next year. Viva la Maxima!

I liked the 85/86 too, but when I saw my first '87 on the lot at the dealership I fell in love. The slightly longer nose changed the proportions just enough to really appeal to me. Within a week I convinced my wife that now that we had two kids, the Celica GT-S was too small for two kiddie seats and it was time that we had a "family car" (I really wanted the V6/5speed!). Three days later the dealer had located a black 5spd for us and we were started along our Maxima journey.
One thing I did not like on any of the Gen 2's were the wheels. Within two weeks I had a set of BBS style cross-lace wheels (black center w/ polished rim) on her. The black centered wheels really helped to visually stretch out and lower the car. I got a lot of compliments on that car.
That was the last car I had with a manual tranny. Two things happened that made us trade it in on the '95 Max... We moved to Charlotte and the traffic sucks here, and I had a nasty accident in my company issued Intrepid ES (http://forums.maxima.org/showpost.ph...6&postcount=21) that I know I would have died in if I had been in the '87 Max.
BTW, I cursed that damned oil filter many, many times!
just got back from a road trip - 180 miles each way - MPG peaked at 20.7
mostly on cruise control too - not too happy thus far - about 4900 miles total - and only use 89 octane gas
also - anyone else with a 2007 confirm the glitch with the Random/Mix setting on the cds? it's really driving me crazy

I took a 1300 mile road trip down and back to FL at just about the same mileage you're at now. Ran about 24 mpg on that trip (80mph avg speed, though I did have my mother-in-law in the car
). At that point I was running about 17 mpg in city driving. City driving is now up to over 20 mpg @ 7k miles, but I haven't run any extended highway trips in the last few thousand miles. Mileage definitely is improving as the car loosens up.You mentioned that you were running mid-grade fuel. One of the side effects of using regular or mid-grade fuel is potentially lower fuel economy. This can certainly depend on driving style & conditions, but anytime the ECU has to retard the timing to prevent detonation, you are losing both power and efficiency.
I have never quite figured out why some people (I don't necessarily mean you, srudoff) get so hung up about using premium fuel in a car designed to take advantage of it. If it costs 5% more than regular, but nets you 5-10% better fuel economy, it can actually cost you more to run lower grade fuel. Like they say, "your mileage may vary", but that scenario is well within the realm of possibility, particularly under higher load driving scenarios.
Been using the ipod almost exclusively... if I get a chance I'll pop in a CD and check out the random function on mine.

On a straight highway trip of about 90 miles a couple of weekends ago, I averaged around 26 while on the straightaway. Long hills lowered it to 24-25 as we got into more hilly terrain. My average speed was kept to around normal for the highway, about 70 mph (65 mph speed limit).
I've had no trouble with the "mix" setting on my CD player, but every now and then, I'll pop a disc in and it'll sit there for a few seconds and gives me a "DISC READ ERROR." It almost always fixes itself it I pop the disc out and back in again. I supect it's a mechanical loading error causing this. I hope it doesn't get worse.
