So I took my Max to a locksmith today to have them cut and program a spare key for me. I bought a blank on Ebay for $20 to save some money, then found a locksmith that claimed to be able to program it. The guy doing it plugged his doohicky into my car and was looking around for a "PIN Number," which was required to program it and is supposedly located somewhere under the steering wheel. He said there were too many numbers and couldn't find what he was looking for, and gave up. I'd really like to avoid paying over $50 for the dealership to do this, can anyone tell me how to locate the PIN? Thanks!

 

i think the number is located on the metal plate that you were given by from the dealer with the valet key and the second copy. it's about 1 inch long, very small numbers are stamped in the metal. check you key chain...

 

you can cut a plain blank. you just cant start the car with it.

Unfortunately I bought my car used, and the dealer had lost all but one original key. I bought a keyless entry remote and blank transponder key off eBay to save some money. The keyless entry remote was easy to program myself, the key seems to be an issue. Sounds like I might need to just bite the bullet and take it to the Nissan dealer, who is going to charge $50 to program it.

Nismo, I was thinking about doing that, but figured I might as well get it programmed since I bought the transponder key. The locksmith actually already cut it, so I can at least get into it if I lock the keys in the car. Still screwed if I lose the key though.

 

BIG TIME!! You dont want to get into replacing the key tumbler in the dash that would suck a$$ big time.

I would have demanded a second set was included with the purchase. they lost it, they can give you one.

 

I had a blank cut to keep in my wallet. I had the car lock me out twice for no known reason. I can open the door, just cant start the car with it.

Who did you get the blank key fobs from? Either I am doing something wrong or I bought some dead ones or something?

It was really easy to program too, came with instructions.

So I'll assume that "replacing the tumbler" is what they have to do when you lose your key and don't have a backup? Out of curiosity, what does that cost? I'm sure it is way more than the $50 I'm going to end up shelling out to get this thing programmed.

Unless of course someone knows how to find the "PIN" number on the car, then I can pay $20 for the locksmith to do it. That was the only locksmith I could find in the area that can program them, guess I could keep looking though.

 

what is the difference between the 05 and the 07 tumbler ??

My key code on the metal tag is a 5 digits number, 11xxx. I trust you guys explicitly!

same here.... it happened to me 4 times..... my friends started asking questions....

 

You might as well go to the dealer to get your key registered. They will connect their diagnostic scan tool to retrieve the PIN for the immobilizer system. That PIN then needs to be 'decoded' using their service information computer. The service information computer generates a number that is then input to the scan tool to allow key registration to take place. Take ALL your keys with you because this key registration process erases all previous keys from system memory and all keys must be registered again.
