who has steering wheel vibrations?

Hi Guys

My first attempt to start a poll:

It seems that some of the 6th gen Maxs are plagued with a persistent steering wheel vibration (or shimmy).

Not just from reading the threads on maxima.org, but also having done a search on http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/complain/ (40 out of 205 2004 Maxima complaints) and having talked with various technicians at various Nissan dealerships; it just takes way to much effort, time and money only to minimize the vibrations in the steering wheel and only for it to slowly grow back in intensity.

The vibrations are NOT "road feel", they are harmonic in nature, frequency aprox 5-10 Hz and I have experienced an amplitude of aprox a couple degrees, and its strength seems peaks at around speeds of 60 miles per hour.

This is just a simple poll to have an idea of how many people suffer from the steering wheel shimmy. I am not trying to start a discussion on what causes the shimmy but the thread is more inclined towards discussing how we can do something together as a group to make Nissan aware of this issue and that we are very frustrated about it.

I have it too. I have a set of winter wheels and tires and it vibrates also so for me it's not the wheels or tires.

I have a feeling this poll is going to have yes far outweigh no. This car's steering is just too sensitive, something is not right, and I agree there is more to the story then just balancing.

Well...stuck out here in Iceland for 17 more days...but wife says the wheel is shaking a bit.....tire shop rebalanced and noticed a rear tire tread seperation going on. I do have 20 inch rims so not a Nissan tire problem. Now....with the price I paid for the car on 20" rims and tires.....not too happy about a tire tread seperation. Have to check on it when I get home. Wife does say the car drives better after rebalance. Hopefully that took care of the slight steering wheel shake. Will need me to test and drive it of course.

Looking forward to coming home to the USA...sold my 87 Honda Accord for one dollar.....was Euro Specs and rusting to hell.....but carberated transportation. Now treading the Icelandic landscape on military boots.....I miss that POS Honda.

I have shimmy at around 100 mph... might as well be the balance of the wheel.
