Tilt wheel steering

Anyone have an issue with their auto up or down tilt steering wheel? By problem I mean do you have a “squeak” as the steering wheel rises and lowers? If so is there a remedy for this? Please don't say dealer either, that’s the last resort.

no squeek here either. But one complaint. I frequently bump the switch with my knee while driving and it moves the wheel up.

May try the dealer on a phone call to see if a service writer will tell you if it's a common problem, and if so if the fix is a do it yourselfer.

My car just turned 600 miles, so needless to say, no problems here.

I dont have a squeek either....but what I have noticed lately is this:

Everyday I get in the car I have to adjust the wheel up about half an inch or so, to see more of the gauges. I have the auto down feature on always, but lately I noticed I leave the car in a comfortable position, get back in and need to readjust the wheel. I used to think it was just the way I was sitting, but now I think its coming down too low, past where it originally was. Anyone else see this happen?

Do you have the seat memory setting? The auto may simply go back to a preset position, not its last position...

With the memory settings, it moves back when you unlock the car... so if you've tweaked its setting, you need to reset the memory setting.

Works great in my '06 as my wife is a foot shorter than I am and obviously has a completely different seating position. Programming it to the keyless remote is a nice feature too... just don't grab the wrong set of keys! =)

I have my memory set, but every now and then, it will start going down then just stop halfway and I have to hold down the memory button to get in in the right spot.

Weird... maybe its hitting some resistance or something and the wheel is stopping short with the auto feature... there might be something about it in the owner's manual. I have 6spd, so I don't have the auto entry/exit feature in my Maxima... =( Just the memory seats.

Interesting thought about the memory function. I just assumed they were totally seperate, ill reset the memory (I dont use it im the only person who ever drives the car)

ok, so hijack back on track... From what I gather only one other has this issue. Guess I'll take it in to the dealer for a workup (driver heating seat recall, tilt wheel squeak, A-pillar squeak, rattle from behind the glove box, raunchy strut sound, and a rattle from the sun roof). <sigh> fawking rattles, squeaks, and other misc noises.

Mine also squeeks (a Sept 2003 build...), but so far only when it is hot outside (85F-90F+)and the interior of the car has been allowed to heat up. After a few minutes with the air conditioner on, it doesn't squeek. So, maybe some metal part is expanding in my case and was just installed improperly (or bent, etc) in yours? If you are under warranty, I'd take it in - I wouldn't want to screw with anything in the steering column.

My 06 maxima with 127k just started to have telescope problems. It started to make a wierd grinding ticking noise when moving the steering wheel forward and back. DIK what it could be.

This is what I found that it is happening to the 7th gen maxima’s too and the fix.

Found this TSB

NTB09094

  • IF YOU CONFIRM The steering column power adjustment (tilt or telescope) does not work or makes abnormal noise when operating the switch. ACTION Replace the adjustment motor (tilt or telescope) with the one listed in the Parts Information. NOTE: Do not replace the entire steering column when replacement of a tilt or telescope motor will solve the incident, if it should occur. See this bulletin for further detail.

If your seat + steerin wheel are adjusting to your last setting and you hit the brake to put your car in drive, it stops automatically where it was so that may be the reason it's stopping half way. You have to wait for it to be done before wen hitting the break to shift into gear.

Had the slight squeak a few years ago, for a few months but it went away on its own.
