Mostly a plastic on plastic sound....but sometimes metal on metal.....not sure if that makes any sense, but that's how it is on my car! But, i'll try your "method!" lol I do it with so many other things and it works jsut like you said, so why not try it on my car?!

Does it move in like a diagonal direction(from like passenger side top of windshield to bottom of drivers door) thats what mine was doing?

Mine does that too when it is very hot outside. Once the interior cools down, the noise stops.

Have you noticed if your is temperature related?

Well, my steering wheel squeeks when I get in and out of the car as the steering wheel moves upon exit and re-entry. Its very annoying, anyone know of a fix?

Nope, I've had the same thing when it is hot outside. Does yours only happen when it is hot in the vehicle (like when you first get in on a hot day)?

thats good to know bc when it is hot, mine squeeks as well. Im getting the steering coumn repaired as well as there is a click or "give" in the column when driving. It is subtle, but noticeable nevertheless. The dealer actually agreed with my issue as I thought they would blow it off. i will bring up the clock spring.

it does not make any noise at higher speeds, or the noise is just less noticeable than at lower speeds?

Just handle the airbag like you would handle any EXPLOSIVE, with care. It needs electricity to ignite. Disconnect the battery and wait 2-3 minutes. One 10mm bolts on each side of the cover under the steering (chk service manual). I took mine out a few days ago to replace one of the steering cover.

I have the same click going on and one dealer blew me off stating that they didn't find anything. I showed it to the guy and he says he sees the problem, bring it in next week will fix it. I pick up the car and its doing the same thing. He tells me they tighten up everything but thats about it. I went to another dealer and he ordered entire steering column because he says they whole thing has too much play. It is currently on backorder but I hope that when it comes it will fix the problem.

As far as removing the dash.....I would never agree too it again unless nothing is working. From when I bought the car the blower would not blow air around the feet so I went back and they took apart the whole dashboard only to order parts. Went back week later, left it for a day, come back to pickup and they said they need to change the entire assembly because the part didn't fix the problem. Come back again and its fixed.........BUT

every time I hit a pot hole the whole dash just rattles. It feels like the car is bottoming out almost every time. My brother also has a max and his is smooth over the holes. We both just changed our suspensions and his is still smooth while mine is even worse. CRAP!
