MisterSparkle - I think you are safe in assuming the '07 Maxima should be considered as a 6.5. The change to a completely different tranny and the total redesign of the front end eminitently qualify the designation as a 6.5 generation.

jsmithsole - I TiVo the '07 commercials and replay them at several speeds. Every time I rewatch one, I see something I missed before.

In the 'poised lipstick' one you mentioned, if you turn up the volume (which I do when replaying it), you get a really good 'listen' to the sound the engine makes with the new CVT.

I like the '07 sound, but after fifty-seven years of driving with shifting trannys, it is going to take me a while to get used to this. Particularly since I am the **** type who is always watching for each shift of the tranny, sort of know at about what speed/rpm/accelleration combo each shift will occur, and become immediately concerned when the shift does not happen.

But this old dog is determined to learn a new trick - driving with a CVT.

Light, i noticed some of my shifts do change. I credit this to our "intelligent" ECU since my driving style is dependent on my mood I think you'll love the CVT, since we both know eventually you'll have another Maxima

When the commercials come on, even my 10 year old son thinks the redone front end looks nice. I like the shifter better and the gauges but I like our big display screen which also makes it easier when I put in a dvd screen in that spot.

Question on the CVT, though - does it let you adjust gear ratio? I can't imagine it being all that useful if you can't lock it into a low gear.

IMO, what they need to do is take the CVT and give it a driver-controlled gear ratio. Have something similar to a non-gated automatic shifter that lets you manually move it to adjust the gearing. That would be pretty cool.

My wife even watched the commerical and asked, is that the 'new' Maxima,she thinks the 07 grill is nicer but nit as nice as the billet grill we just ordered

Yeah, it lets you "shift" just like the current 5 speed automatic. But I think the CVT gives you 6 "gears" (or fixed ratio points).

so nalc now you have to buy one since it comes with what you said.
tho it is different in ways to how the Auto works, same idea. except this one will lets you stay in any gear to a stop. even allows you to stay as low as possible to any spped (though I did not thoroughly test that, I had it in "1st" preety high up with plenty of room to go.

possibly an advantage.

I hope one of the magazines do a road test of it and test some 0-60 and qtr mile times compared to the 5sp auto.

I actually this morning received a postcard in the mail "inviting" me to come test drive the '07 w/ CVT as soon as the dealership I bought my car from receives them. May do it out of curiosity. I actually didn't know what CVT was until my boyfriend told me. Concept seems so "duuuh"!

I think it should be called the 7th Gen just because of so much changed on the exterior and the interior of the car.
Also am I the only one who thinks it looks more like the current 07 Altima

the CVT is cool and takes alittle getting used to. I would still call it a 6.5 though... as it did retain most of the styling cues of the 6th gen... A new generation number should only be used on a complete redesign.

i'm more of a 5.5 gen fan but I'm luvin the new max. I think I'm gonna try and get a test drive this week or next. damn ses light is on so i gotta bring her in. has anyone drived the cvt and not like it at all??

The more I see these commercials the more I start to like the changes. I'm still waiting on test driving one. If I were to pick up this years I would have to go with it in black.

i drove an 07 murano at work with the cvt and manual shift mode, i dont know if i wasnt going fast enough or something maybe doing around 40-50kmh but when i shifted it into 2nd in manual mode the revs didnt even change but the gear position thing changed to 2. getting use to CVT will take some time, but i think its a pretty good idea, if you make all your power at redline then if you floor it it will just maintain at 6500rpm or w/e rpm you make peak power at and hold it there, no worrying about falling out of the powerband when shifting. i think the cvt would be good in turbocharged cars with big turbos.

I only watch a few hours TV each day (mostly news/weather/stock reports, etc), yet manage to see several '07 Maxima ads every day. I would understand if it was a volume leader such as the Altima, but am a little surprised the upscale Maxima is being promoted this strongly.

But then the dealers have plenty of them to sell. The smallish dealer (where I do all my business) just over three miles from my home has 11 '07 Maximas (6 SLs and 5 SEs), the slightly larger dealer 12 miles away has 20 (11 SLs and 9 SEs), and another small dealer 18 miles away has 13 (4 SLs and 9 SEs).

If I expand my nissanusa search to 30 miles, I add six more dealers, some very large. Expanding the search to 50 miles adds yet six more dealers. Expanding the search to 75 miles gives me yet eight more dealers, giving me 23 Nissan dealers within 75 miles, with over 200 '07 Maximas to choose from. Most of those 200 are within forty miles of my home.

I noticed that the nissanusa site calls the color Pebble Beach 'Pebble Peach'. But that is a minor glitch when compared with other faux pas to be found there.

The problem is that CVTs aren't meant to handle large amounts of power, that is until recently. There is still a limit to how much CVTs can take, and it wont happen until they figure out way better designs to handle more power.

Agreed. Have also heard that CVTs have "heat problems." Not certain what that means exactly.

Give me a good ol clutch and 6 forward gears to handle the power in my Max.

I agree the commercial looks cool. Suspect the engine sound was recorded somewhere other than next to the driver.

SilverMax_04 - In most TV commercials, most audio sounds (other than the person shown speaking) are added later. If the engine/tranny sound in the '07 Maxima CVT ad was actually that loud inside the car, nobody over age 18 would buy it.

Again, my sympathy to you with regard to the CVT. You live in an area (reasonable traffic, with nearby mountains) where a 6 speed is actually a logical option, and would be fun to drive.
