Tire Size ?
My friend has a 2004 Max. With his car came goodyear tires size 245/45/18. He was wondering, would be able to put a a set of tires 245/40/18 on his car without any problems. He still has the factory SE rims on the car.

Does he need new tires?
Is he lowered?
If the answer is No, he will have a bigger wheel gap and look worse.
I searched Tire Rack and I did not see any 245/40/18 listed as fitting the a 2004 Nissan Maxima. Not saying it won't though...

Try this site to tell you a little about tire sizing... According to this site, the speedo will be off a significant amount.

According to the mismatched tire sizing, when you are actually traveling at 60 MPH your car is registering @ 63 MPH. This, then, applies to you putting more miles on the Odometer than you really are. Over the life of the tires you are making your car less valuable b/c it will have more miles on the odometer than in reality and thus making your car worth less $$ on the open market.

And the 245/40/18 tires have a lower weight-carrying capacity than the OEM 245/45/18 tires. But, unless you regularly carry a trunkful of moonshine or a car pool, you should be fine with the smaller tires. And no tickets because you are never going as fast as you think.

In replacing an OEM 245/45/18 tire, if I simply wanted a wider or larger tire, I would go with 255/45/18 (this change would result in the speedo reading low).
If I wanted a sportier, firmer ride, I would go with 255/40/18 (this change would have only a very small affect on the speedo).
If I wanted a very slightly more comfortable ride, I would go with 235/50/18 (this change would have only a very small effect on the speedo).
If I wanted a clearly more comfortable ride, I would go with 235/55/18 (this change would result in the speedo reading high).
The reason the Maxima has an unusually wide turning radius of 44 feet (about four feet greater than average) is because the tires would hit the frame if they turned any sharper. To me, this would indicate that a size 265 tire in any profile might rub either the frame or fender or both in 'lock' turns. I would strongly recommend against a 265 width tire on the Maxima.

Sorry to pull this old post out again.
The stock RIMs are 7.5" wide. It can take 245/45/18 tires.
255/45/18 tires require minimum of 8" wide RIMs.
Any consequences of using 255/45/18 tires on stock RIMs? Will they fit or fall apart while driving at high speed? Does anyone has 255/45/18s on stock RIMs?
