You'd need retuning once you install the headers.

i definitely forgot about that, it was on my pending list of mods to get anyway. i guess i'll be getting an AFC that prematurely.

Here's an update. We've done one trial fitting of the prototype y-pipe. Pretty close, but not quite, so it was sent back for modification and will return with the fresh batch of 95-03 Maxima headers we'll receive tomorrow (12 July).

The prototype will go back on the car and we'll do some dyno runs to see what sort of power it makes. This should all be happening before the end of next week.

The y-pipes (one version for 04-06 5-speed autos and another for 04-06 6Ms and 07 CVTs) are the first half of the project and once that design is finalized and headed for production we'll start on the manifolds.

These things always take longer than expected, but at this time I'm hoping to have the y-pipes in production by late August or early September. Manifolds will come later in the Fall.

Just to be clear, unlike our 95-03 header/y-pipes, the design of the 04+ Maximas allows us to make a y-pipe that can be used by itself OR with the header manifolds. So, there's no reason not to slap the y-pipe on as soon as its ready (EASY installation) and then add the headers when they're ready (nt so easy an installation).

I hope this information is useful.

Thanks for the update, its nice that we have the option of buying JUST the y pipe and installing until the full set is ready.

Too soon to tell, we're finishing up the two y-pipe versions before starting on the manifolds. I'm just thankful that we know about this issue up front before starting the project (instead of finding out about it after its done, as I assume Hotshot did).

My understanding is that the stock y-pipe on the '07 is like the 6M y-pipe used on the 04-06. If that's the case, the 6M version of the our 6thgen y-pipe should work on the '07 too. The difference between the 04-07 5A and 6M y-pipes is minor, so we will follow up with the 6M version shortly after the 5A version is ready.

'Course we'll still need to do a testfit of the 6M y-pipe, so DeusMaxima, we'll be calling soon.

Cattman 6th gen y-pipe update

Thought I'd let everyone know that we did what turns out to be the final test fit of the 04-06 Maxima 5A (auto) y-pipe.

I'm very pleased with the physical part. Beautiful fit, absolutely nothing to improve.

It's on a customer's 05 5A Max now, and we will do the "after" dyno tonight. I'm not sure what to expect since I've always been a bit skeptical about the performance claims for the CE/Vibrant version of this part.

I'll try to report back tomorrow.

We haven't forgotten. My understanding is that one of these two designs will also fit the 4A (the 6M version?).

Ah yes, and there would also be this small matter of...

DYNO RESULTS! Here you go:

And here's the prototype part (production will have longer flexes, fewer tubing sections and welds):

I'm sorry the dyno graph isn't clearer, but here are some of the basic #s:
(Figures given for Stock y-pipe/Cattman y-pipe)

Peak WHP, 195/205 @ 5950rpm
Max WHP difference, 10whp @ 5950rpm
Peak WTQ, 206/214 ft/lbs @ 2490rpm
Max WTQ difference, 13 ft/lbs @ 4050rpm

I'll note that these tests were done on a Mustang dyno, which is well known for low HP/TQ numbers (it seems to come in about 5-7% below a dynojet dyno). Doesn't really matter here, our main interest is the difference between the two tests, not the absolute #s.

So there you go. Given that the stock piece flows relatively well in the first place, I'm pleased with the results. The part will be a worthwhile mod by itself, and an excellent compliment to our upcoming header system.

Obviously this y-pipe does not have a cat, although we will offer a version that does. Before anyone suggests that most of the power gain is due to the absence of a cat, I'll contradict that. The new primary cats in the Maximas are extremely efficient, and don't cost much power.

I can't estimate a firm date for the release of a production version, but it should come together before the end of August. I'll also note that the sale price is uncertain - I'm still trying to decide on materials. 304 Stainless is getting so expensive, we're onsidering making the part w/ 439 stainless to keep the cost down. [If anyone has thoughts on that, feel free to comment.]
