no it's not carb legal, it does delete 1 of you 3 cats.

They ship from canada

Now that brings me to a question... anyone have problems with the pollution testing in Illinois? Cook County specifically?

How do they test in Cook County? OBD-II ECU inquiry or the tail pipe test? If OBD-II you are OK with this y-pipe. The last sensor is located ahead of the CAT. The ECU has no other sensor downstream. Removing the CAT does not affect the onboard emissions recorded by the ECU.

Posts on other boards seem to indicate that this CAT is for ULEV and to control emissions during warm up. They speculate that if you warm up your car properly, you will do fine on the old tail pipe test. Remember, you still have 2 large size CATs.

Worst case, you re-install the OEM, and resell the Y for top $$ after Taz runs out.

12whp/9wtq gain from just this pipe? there has got to be some more mods.

Why is it so hard to believe? headers are typically supposed to give 25hp to the wheels, and they delete the precats 2 cats then add a high flow where the y pipe cat would be. 12 hp per cat deleted isn't that far fetched, not to mention the improved flow from the larger piping

mine did not come on, and I have a fujita CAI as well. there's really very little reason the check engine light should come on... there's no sensors after the y-pipe to cause the light to come on.

Update on my CE Y-pipe: I've had it on for 3 days now. I didn't really notice the change in sound until I did my regular commute a few times. I have a Nismo CAI and with it and the Y-pipe my car "growls" oh so nice. So nice I might wait on a catback for a while. As for the hp gain, I don't think I'll get any hp gains until I get my new TS reflashed ECU in this Saturday. The stock ECU seems to "undo" any gains made in the intake or exhaust.

I'll put my '05 Maxima on the dyno when I get the TS ECU, UD pulley, R-Tune camshafts, and catback all installed in the next few months. Along with the Y-pipe and CAI I'll be disappointed if I'm not pulling close to 300 whp naturally aspirated. We'll see...

Quick question. Why did you not go with HotShot headers? I figured since you're going as far as to install cams & upgrade the ECU( = pricey), why not get headers as well?

Not sure of the A33 headers fit the A34, but the L31 units have been proven to fit.

Just a thought since the A33 units are on sale for $300 now.

I might be able to be convinced, but my intial reaction is a fear that my car would never pass emissions. Do you have these installed or are you thinking about it? $300 is tempting, but I'm sure the install is a real bear. I put some headers on a '76 Firebird that I owned when I was in the service 20 years ago (had access to a garage then). That was a cuss job and a half and there was PLENTY of room under that hood vs. my Maxima's engine bay where it's tight.

Oh, post a link to that sale please. Thanks!

hey brian,

thanks for replying. that's ok, no problem - i sat with a couple of my friends, asked for their opinion in terms of the sound. They said, they could surely feel the difference in sound in stock versus y-pipe installed and it growls when i just step on it and the rpms climb up. I honestly love it as i hit 200 Kms (125 Miles) 3-4 times in the past 2-3 days with ease and my max speed before was 160 kms and the engine would send vibrations to the car and at this point, I'd kinda get scared and let off the gas pedal but in all honesty, i was zooming at 180 last night and the car was perfectly stable and it reaches high speeds in no time. The Y-Pipe with the Front MMI surely made a difference in how my car performs. I'd surely get it - I'm not sure about the emissions part but I don't have to worry about that for the next 4 years as i drive a 07 and apparently, new cars get a 4 year break before the next emissions. Anyways, GET IT - I LOVE IT

P.S - My mileage is back to normal, i'm not sure if it's better but i'll check it out in my next - fill up. Also, I'm looking to get the Fujita CAI once it's available.

After a little reading, the SE-R units are completely out of stock, and those are the ones proven to fit. But they have 02-03 units available, which probably wont fit.

So, you're correct in that the install would be a : But, there is always glory for the pioneers. http://www.hotshot.com/Hotshot_site0...06/ns3017.html

It should pass emissions since you would still retain the stock main cat (under the vehicle)

Look at the OEM y-pipe. The section where the middle support bracket is located is about one inch thick only. Going over the cross-member, they wanted to give maximum ground clearance. And also detune the car. No cat. And the OEM front pipes are smaller.

Have a look at your exhaust pipe under the gas tank. Another flat section about 12 inches long.

The reason you don't feel a gain is that exhaust mods tend to lean out the fuel mixture. At normal speed, the ECU will use a 'fuel trim' to re-adjust the A/F based on feedback from the O2 sensors, correcting any rich or lean condition. At WOT, that's another story. The car goes into open loop and is primarily using a fixed fuel map. Which is now too lean.

That is why some of the members get a NEO or Apexi AFC controller to correct the A/F ratio after a few mods.

Some CAI will also lean the A/F. The large 3" pipes reduce friction but also the air speed (when comparing same RPM). Depending on where the MAF is installed in the CAI, it may detect less air moving by and lean out the A/F.

madmik, yeah, i saw a post from rhmax about teh rear section in the exhuast. i have all my parts ready to be isntalled during my spring break! i know this motor has a lot of potential with the right mods. yeah, when someone posted some pix of teh oem y pipe in different angles, at first i was surprised how they smash it in like that. i have been debating on jsut cutting off that part of teh exhast and weld in a piece of staright pipe. hopefully the sound wont increase taht much.

would it be ideal to put the MAF sensor closer to the filter or closer to the engine? (i built my own SRI out of pep boys parts and i guess i could move the MAF sensor around)

Maximum velocity would be closest to the throttle plate, but not so close that your breather tube is in front of the MAF, cause oil would gunk it up.

FYI, Apex'i makes the NEO also.

Quote: The large 3" pipes
The NISMO CAI is 2.75mm. Not sure why they would do this since the TB is 3". The MAF sensor is calibrated for 2.75", and if it is palced in anything larger, it throws calibration off and creates a lean condition since the MAF sensor itself is seeing less volume than what it is 'calibrated' for.

Again, tubing has nothing to do with it, but more so, the I.D. of the MAF housing. That's the main culprit for the said lean condition.

Got it done at my local muffler shop. Did not feel the difference but often you need a dyno pull to measure the gains.

The stock mufflers have to go with that crimp if you want a noticable gain. Stock is really restrictive, and don't forget that four foot resonator.

I know the NISMO CAI for the Altima is smaller. Am almost positive my NISMO has a 3" I.D.

Stock mufflers aren't very restrictive. They aren't as freeflow as Magnaflow or Greddy. The stock reonator has a slight bottleneck at entry, where Magnaflow ones are the same diameter all the way through.

I was told by quite a few people that they were not very friendly to flow especially when compared to magnaflow/borla etc..

I had the piping done when I had new resonator installed. It showed on the dyno at 212.9WHP w/ K&N panel filter, about 8+ WHP gain over the stock numbers I've seen. I think bone stock numbers are between 200-204WHP.

rhmax, what kind of resonator did you install? Did you just do a resonator and fix that crimp in the exhaust and you got 8whp? How was the sound effected?

Magnaflow resonator, 20" or 22", I forgot; and new pipe to replace to crimped part, stock diameter. Here's the video clip w/ y-pipe and stock mufflers.

There's a very slight drone at 2500RPM (not lower or higher) since installed the y-pipe. Other than that, no one can tell the difference from inside until WOT.
