resinator removal...
has anyone tried this on their maxima? the big huge center resinator, leave the y pipe/mufflers/cats untouched just replace that with a smaller resinator, or straight pipe?
i think im going to try it, figured id post up here for opinions first.

I went with an aftermarket Magnaflow when I put the mufflers on. DO NOT put straight pipe in it's place. Trust me, I tried. I can't find the words to tell you how loud and ghetto it sounds. You can however, replace the 2ft. piece of crimped crap they put in towards the rear. This is a 6th gen right??
I dynoed my car with K&N panel and Magnaflow resonator with new piping to replace the crimp section, with stock mufflers, and gained 12WHP. The exhaust tone is a little deeper and -slightly- louder; similar tone to G35 but not nearly as loud.
im looking for g35/350z stock exhuast + 1.
im talking the huge resinator after the Y before it splits to the rear mufflers.
assuming i get my car back tommorrow im going to try straight pipe instead of the resinator, figure i have 3 cats, and 2 mufflers it cant be that loud, and ill atleast know what it sounds like where as if i put a smaller resinator in id always wonder how it would be unresinated

The stock resonator is very important. I bought and installed the Cattman Exhaust with the resonator a couple of months ago and it sounds awesome under acceleration and I did pick up a good amount of power, but it drones terribly under load at part throttle. The Nissan guys knew what they were doing. I cannot get rid of the drone, no matter what I try.

Yes, the big long thing under the middle of the car. I got new piping all the way to the rear split. The section to the mufflers are mandrel bent, so you can leave those alone. I went with stock size piping.
If anybody got clips I will host them. I want to create a page with sound clips from different exhausts/different mufflers/different resonators etc. so that anybody could visit and download them before making a decision. There is a lot of posts with clips out there but the links expired, if I am allowed to host your clip, you will get credit and the files will always be available.

I would think that you would donate and take advantage of the search function before running your mouth in every thread...

As to the search, JSmithsole did a search for us the other day and all the links were expired.
I removed my resonator and went with a custom pipe from the cat to the mufflers. The car is only a bit louder and performs better. Seems to breath better. I have an AEM CAI, UR-UDP and FSB. In the summer I occaisonally use 94 octane and I do the old accelerator pedal ECU reset....dramatic results and a nice loud growl when I floor it.
And the car is also lowered....and has upgraded brakes (Cross-drilled oversized rotors and Hawk HPS Pads)

Happy Motoring!

I took the resonator off when I installed my two maganflows and at first it sounded real nice. Deep growl!! Only problem was that I couldnt hear my self talk or any one else talk inside the car. Had it with out the resonator for about 2 months after that I had to go install a magnaflow resonator in cause I couldnt take it anymore.
well i lost the stock resinator today, straight pipe in place of it, bairly louder, like no difference at all between idle-4k rpm, a little deeper, no louder though.
4k-redline it seems to pull a little harder, like the car did after the stock airbox was modded, it also seems to sound more g/zish from 4k+ but idk if thats in my head, or it actually is.

This is a clip of my exhaust sound. Stock mufflers with CE y-pipe, Magnaflow resonator, and repiping to the rear split. The burbling/popping sound is probably the result of one less cat. You can tell when I hit the 7100RPM rev-limiter, start, and stop; it like popping corns.
