egr valve and catalytic converter

egr valve and catalytic converter

so my service engine soon light comes on the other day so i take it the shop to get the code pulled. i think it was p1402 which said it was the egr system. turns out the egr valve and my catalytic converter are bad due to carbon build up in the egr valve that made the catalytic go bad. i have an injen intake and was wondering if maybe this was the cause of the egr and catalytic going bad. what do you guys think? before i took it to the shop i put tmy stock air box back on but now that it is going to get fixed i am debating on whether i am going to put my injen back on. the good thing is that under federal emmision laws the catalytic converter is covered up to 80,000 miles by nissan. the only thing that is not covered is the egr valve which is like 160. it just made me mad that nissan will cover the catalytic converter but not the part that made the cat go bad (egr valve). the cat is like $800 just for your guys information, plus install and reprogramming your looking at over a grand. good thing it it covered. i am currently at 58,000 miles. you guys think the injen intake is to blame?

P1402- EGR stuck open, bad EGR temp sensor is keeping EGR open, or loose connection/broken wire. Cannot see how Injen CAI is a contributor.

In my humble opinion, if the EGR is stuck open because of carbon build up, you are either running way rich or burning oil. Are you burning oil?

Do a bit of research on the EGR valve warranty. Since this is an emission component, why not covered until 80K also? Especially in Cali.

There is a TSB about this code. Print the following and talk to your Nissan dealer about it. They may do the repair at no charge.

The TSB is about debris keeping the EGR open. His is carbon buildup. NISSAN may not cover. I suspect they could clean up the EGR instead of replacing it.

On other forums, they mention the EGR problem on higher mileage engine 80K +. I am surprised at 58K. Some say it can be the result of using 'cheaper' gas, not enough cleaning agents. Are you using regular instead of premium?

they said the egr was not covered. only the cat but at least they are covering that because that it the most expensive part. i have always used 91 octane.

Yes, the catalitic converter. But the important thing they do not say is what causes the CC to breakup like that. ??

I have a 2004 maxima and I had to replace the three way catalytic convertor at 74,000 miles but dealer did not cover cause the 8 year warranty had expired in January and we were in November. they got me........
