picked up a 6gen

Hey so I picked up an 04 6MT yesterday. after having an 00 se 5MT, 02 se, and now this I must say never knew what I was missing, asbolutely love the car. everything about it.

I do have a question though, for anyone who may know the answer, while traveling at highway speed, (70-80 mph) downshifting to 3rd while rpms are low (1000-2000) makes a kinda like grinding sound, and a little resistance, doesnt happen if the rev is matched. I dont know if thats something to worry about, or if i should have them check it. I know you should match revs, but trying to see if that may be a problem or not. thanks in advance

Sounds like you might have a synchro going bad. I don't know what the maxima guys use, but the Z guys use redline MT-90 in their trannies and it puts off issues like that for at least a couple years.

Transmission fluid. Drain and replace. Don't take my word for it, I have a CVT. Ask some of the people here with 6MTs if they would recommend it. I'm just telling you what the guys in the 300ZX world tend to do in your situation.

Congrats on the new car! As for the problem, I'd give the Redline MT-90 a shot like tehaviator suggested. I had the same problem in my Z.

yep, yep, I got the same thing with my max. 3rd gear is tough to get in and grinds a tiny bit. But only when shifting from low rpms.

Congrats. Another satisfied customer, perhaps less the syncro issue.

Hey Kam, many thanks for that thread. I had no idea Mobile-1's synthetic was corrosive. Is this common knowledge? Sadly, it was the only synthetic on the shelf in my local auto part stores and has been in my tranny for about 9 months. I’m changing it ASAP.

Could you share your thoughts on the new 6th gen v/s 5.5 gen? Newer ones are assembled in the US. Do you see any difference in build quality? How is fit and finish in the new compared to the old?

hey thanks everyone for the warm welcome to the 6gen threads. so yes, im a completely satisfied customer. I did read up on fluids/lubes and found info im looking for. ordering thr mt-90 tomorrow.
Someone asked on build quality..me coming from 2 5th gens to a 6th gen, i noticed that a lot of things were improved in the 6gen..everything from the stiffness of the body, handling, braking, down to little things like, you dont have to hold the wiper stalk on mist for over a second to get a full sweep. things have improved, door panels seem tighter, they dont move when u rest ur knee on it and pull it shut. a lot more detail was put into this car vs 5gen. dont get me wrong...5gens are GREAT cars. and some people will not get a 6gen because they liked the styling of a 5gen. i did too, thought id NEVER get a 6gen. but now that i have one, i REALLY like the styling and everything about it. sorry for the long lecture here, lol and thanks again everyone.

I think you're crazy haha.. An A33B IMO was the best maxima ever made and you friggen had one and sold it.

Good luck.

you know what..it was a great car and I loved the 2k2 (a33B) but like, little things that annoyed me in that car, are improved/fixed in this one. Just most parts were from 1999-2000 so it was aging design/technology wise. I just miss my DDE angel eyes.

every day, i am liking the 6gen more and more. it does look a little weird at certain angles, but if you look at it as a whole, its a bueatiful car. everything flows well. now I am gonna see if I can retrofit my berk intake from my 2k2 into this car. im sure i can do it.

one other question is, my 2000 maxima 5speed had tranny problems, ended up having to get it rebuilt. how much stronger are the 6speeds?

Indeed, my good friend had an '03 SE and I loved that thing like a brother.. I've driven the 6th Gen and it didn't even place in the top ten.

Anyhow, still a lovely car and congrads.

Drove my friend's 6th gen the other day, must say it's a lot nicer than the 4th I used to have. Are there any issues with reliability on those cars? Debating picking one up...

Thanks!

Love mine. To date I have 40,xxx miles and it has been great to me. The Bose stereo's are the only pickle I've had with her. This is no surprise to Nissan. Otherwise the car is phenominal.
