2007 Maxima Navigation Problem

Hi everyone,

I just gave in my '04 Maxima SE (so sad to see it go) and picked up my new '07 Maxima SE. I have everything but the elite package - don't really understand the point of the bucket seats in the back.

Anyway, on my 04 I had the navigation, and on my new 07 I have the navigation as well. I've had the car for 2 weeks (LOVE the CVT, the upgraded interior and suspension), and on Friday, I just tried the navigation for the first time. And, I encountered a rather strange problem that I hope some people here could help me out with. I'd probably call the dealer or contact Zenrin, but I really want to make sure that I haven't overlooked a setting before I go calling them and having them tell me I'm a moron. So, I've come here to be called a moron instead.

Here is the problem/situation:

The map comes on fine, and my location is correct. I can get my GPS information, LAT/LONG, and elevation from the Navigation menus. As I drive, the map correctly moves my cars icon on the map to where I currently am. The problem arises when I attempt to plan a route to a destination.

When I put in a street address for a location, it finds the location within its database, and when I say "OK" to finalize route planning, it tells me: "No roads were found around the current location". It then goes back to the map view, and at the bottom right it actually does tell me the direction of my destination (with that little arrow) and it also tells me distance (miles) to my destination. However, it doesn't show/highlight the route on the map, nor does the voice guidance come on to tell me "right turn, ahead" or similar notifications, as it did on my '04 Maxima.

I have even attempted to go to POIs (Points of Interest) that are pre-loaded in the DVD database. The same exact thing happens - it tells me "no roads were found around the current location", but then it does give me the arrow indication showing general direction that I need to go in, along with the distance to the destination. But no actual guidance.

I have route guidance on, and I have literally triple-checked every possible setting.

When plotting my destinations, I am on heavily traveled MAIN roads. Hell, I live on Long Island - you're hard pressed to find undeveloped (or even unpaved) roads where I live.

Any idea what's going on?

If not, do you think it's better to call the dealer first, or call the Navigation company, Zenrin @ www.zenrin.com?

I feel like a big old dummy, but I have literally worked on this for hours now. I have nearly read the nav manual cover to cover, and I even did a Google search for the exact error with no luck...

it has to be something either wrong or a setting I'm missing, but for the life of me, I can't figure it out.

Any ideas? TIA!!!

Take it to the dealer...I've had no such issues with my navi. I find this nav system to be far superior to the '04 version. Wait until you see the split screen. And the indicator for distance until your turn is much better too. Good luck.

I like the way it looks, and I saw the split screen briefly when I was looking at the setup options.

I guess I'll call the dealer on Monday.

I’ve never seen this problem (but I have an ’05) and have seen very few issues with the Nissan navi systems. I know you said you triple checked every thing, but ust a few thoughts:

1. Are you sure you do not have the “Avoid area Settings” accidentally activated.
2. Are you currently in an “Auto Re-route” mode? If so select cancel guidance from the screen, then select a new destination.
3. Have you specified your “Home” location? If not, program your home and then see if that helps.
4. With no destination programmed, travel away from home a few miles and then try to select Home as the destination.
5. From the navi screen select “Where am I” and see where it thinks it is!
6. Try turning on and off the auto re-route.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I can tell you what I have done so far as to your points above:

#1 - I have not set anything specifically, but I will double-check that - good thinking.

#2 - I am in auto-reroute mode, but disabling it has no effect.

#3, #4 - I have done both with no success.

#5 - It knows exactly where it is, and has been correct every time, telling me where I am and what street is coming up next.

Thanks for the reply. I saw the information here on how to get into some of the more detailed settings of the Nav (turning off the radio, hold mute and turn the volume **** back and forth) but I';m really hesitant to get into that. I figure they make it tough to get into for a reason.

Ya, I've never been into the detailed navi setting for the same reason that you specified, but at the same time I never encountered a problem like this so I would be tempted to poke around. When I picked up my ’05, the sales person and the service tech didn’t know jack about the max navi. That said, I would still take it to the dealer first, let them decide what to do, that's what the warranty is all about.

I just got a call from them, as luck would have it. Talked to the service manager who put me on the phone with one of the lead 'technology' techs - I guess thats the younger-kid that knows most about the techy stuff. He understood the problem, but he said he didn't have an answer yet. They are going to call Nissan, and after I suggested I might try and call Zenrin (who makes the nav software) they suggested I do that on my end, and they'll check with Nissan on their end.

Just an odd thought, have you removed the DVD and looked at it? Is it damaged or scratched?

It was on my list of stuff to do, and I tried it today. However, getting to it is a royal PITA in the Maxima. The console doesn't seem to be as wide as my '04, and the plastic (or whatever) piece that has to come off to get to the DVD drive sounds like it's going to break every time I attempt to remove it. On the '04, it was easy -- you could do it with your own finger. On the '07, it seems to require the use of a screwdriver, and when I use the screwdriver, it just doesn't feel right. So, I stopped.

Well that makes upgrading the Zenrin DVD a little difficult!

Unless I'm a complete moron - which is possible - I am not able (with any confidence) to get that plastic piece off without the fear of breaking it.

I'm going to try again when I have time + daylight.
