Gas MPG

I was wondering what kind of gas mileage you guys are getting in town and hwy in your 2007 Max.. I read a disapointing MPH test report on a 2007 Altima with a V6 getting around 22MPG (hwy) at best. I get 28 on the hwy with my 2003 Max. Was their test flawed?

i get about 24-26 in rush hour highway traffic; and that's bay area traffic just to remind you

This is with premium unleaded btw. I dont get why ppl put regular, 20 cent/gallon is not that much difference economically.

I'm getting a pretty steady 22 in mixed driving. I am trying a tank or two of premium instead of mid-grade to see what happens..

23-25 mpg all round driving and that is with me constantly getting on it when a nice long clear patch of road opens up. It would probably do better if I kept it under 80. For some reason I am seeing a better mpg with 92 octane then with 87 but the cost play a big part in what I buy.

Same numbers here for an '04. Just to add to the explanation, I used to be a 'spirited' driver until these prices started to hit highs last year. Now I take it easy most of the times, though is hard with a 3.5 ready to go at your wish, but the prices are really killing me now, so I'm finally controlling my foot better.

Anyway, just two things we should add to this thread:

What about fuel filters? How often should be changed? And how difficult is it to change?

Also, what about a tune up? At what mileage should it be done?

I believe the thread was asking about '07 Maxes. Don't get pissed, if you responded about your mileage from other years! But I've owned six Maxes over the years and my '07 gets the worst mileage of all of them! I'm getting 21-24mpg in mixed driving whereas I've normally had better results in prior models. I thought the CVT was supposed to improve mileage!

Isn't acetone bad for the internal components? like the rubber fuel lines and maybe the engine internals too???

Please correct me if I'm wrong, cuz it just seems too good to be true, or else why isnt this known all over?

jc53,

As a potentail buyer, I too am concerned about the mileage with the CVT in the '07 Max. My '04 SE averages 23 mpg on 87 octane in mixed driving which is acceptable. What WOULDN"T be acceptable is for the "new and improved" transmission to be LESS fuel efficient.

How many miles are on yours at this point?

This may not be as bad as it appears. According to fueleconomy.gov, the 2007 Maxima's mileage is rated at 21/28 city/highway. So far, three people provided their actual mileage estimates. They were 16.7 mpg (70% city), 18.3 mpg (60% city), and 25.5 mpg (40% city).

For a comparison, four 2005 Maxima auto owners provided their actual mileage. They were 16.5 mpg (80% city), 21.5 mpg (60% city), 24.1 mpg (40% city), and 24.7 mpg (30% city).

This website points out that these are estimates. One person’s city driving can be very different than another person’s city driving. Likewise, one person’s 65 mph highway driving can be very different than another person’s 80 mph highway driving.

Using mid grade (@ my altitude premium is a waste of money) I am getting 23 consistantly mixed driving with a lead foot. Hope that helps.

18.5 mostly city. Like 30-40 mph. Although I have a nice 15 min commute to work the shlomos that drive on the main strech with me can't drive and I often get stuck behind grandma doing 25. this happens often, stop go stop go which I know is killing my mileage. Hightway she runs like a beaut, 25+ no problem. I hit 29 the first day I got it on the highway. FYI, I also only have 6500 mi thus far and heard it should get better once over 10K, we shall see.

Updated mileage

Ironically, after posting this I made a better attempt to get the mileage up. So I drove a little more conservatively. Lone behond, I picked up a few miles. Drove about 50-60 miles, close to half highway. But was able to maintain and actually continue to raise the mileage while on the local roads. stopped drive was at 20.5 INteresting to was that I played a little more with tiptronic or whatever you wanna call it, but keep the rpm's up a little higher (lower gear) seemed to help. My logic is that the motor needs a little less to start going again once you slow down, which is all I do on local roads. So with that, it is possible to achieve higher mileage ratings you just need to drive very conservative. To be honest though it wasn't that bad, I just didn't rocket away every time I started from a dead stop. I actual "coasted" up to speed. Kinda weird

At 6 K feet in elevation (most of Colorado Springs), 85 octane regular (this is the octane of regular in the Rocky Mountains) acts like 91 octane gasoline at sea level. So I burn 85 octane in my 04. If there is any doubt about the effects of high altitudes on octane requirements for normally aspirated gasoline engines, just check out my extensive posts on "Octane Number and What It Means."

Maxmaybe...

Currently getting about 22mpg in mixed driving. Just passed 6K in miles. When I first got the car, I was doing all highway and got 24-26mpg doing highway speed (55-75).

This is very true. In my city driving, I frequently am on roads that let me go 45 to 55 MPH, with only an occasional stop light to hurt gas mileage. If I were driving on the downtown streets of a big city (Chicago, NYC, etc) my mileage would be much worse. In city driving (burning 85 octane regular) I get between 22 and 25 mpg (with the number improving with warmer spring weather).

On a recent (April) 2 K mile round trip to Chicago (all I 80 and I 76) my Max averaged:
- Going East: 27.91 mpg calculated (28.0 from computer) over 895 miles of pure Interstate driving with a slight tail wind and cruising between 70 and 80 MPH (and averaging 70 according to my computer).
- Going West: 26.43 mpg calculated over 403 miles with a strong wind (and some rain) from the North-NW. (24.9 mpg from the computer -- which I believe is more accurate than the calculated number above, due to the effect of strong wind -- for 566 miles at an average speed of 71 MPH).

Due to high gas prices in the Chicago area, I did not fill up at all there (so I don't have good highway mileage numbers for the whole trip) and bought all of my gasoline in Iowa or west. I burn the cheapest grade, which in Iowa is mid-grade made from blending 10% ethanol into regular. Ethanol (because it has less energy) in gasoline degrades the mileage you would obtain with pure gasoline.

On my trip home, I ran into a snow storm and was driving behind a simi (on US Highway 24) going between 10 and 25 MPH due to poor visability. I have not included the mileage for that stretch of driving in the west-bound calculations above. (That stretch with the snow averaged 45 MPH over 416 miles -- the snow driving was for about 60 miles near the end -- and the computer said I got 25.2 mpg).

These are actual numbers -- in so far as the Max computer is correct with its readings -- and I am able to fill my gas tank to the same level each time I fill up -- which is not possible, IMHO -- and is why I tend to believe the computer more than the calculated gas mileage.

I just got home from a trip (Iowa to Kentucky and back). About 680 miles each way. Got 28.5 going out with not much wind and not needing to run A/C much. Got 28.8 coming back with a partial tailwind but much more A/C use. Also had to endure traffic b/c of an accident, probably took 20 min. to go 2-3 miles with 85 deg. temps. and A/C blasting. This is about as good as I've done. CC was usually set from 71-75mph.

I have an 05 w/6 MT, I would think an auto or CVT would do better under similar circumstances, because of the taller gearing.

I get about 16 MPG, mostly city.

I think there should be a thread about MPG for big cities and MPG for village like places. I mean come on, in NYC we have lights (mostly red) every block and new ones are poping up like shrooms after rain. I won't say that I am not driving hard but NYC is a true stop and go environment.

Picking up a 2007 SE tonight. Sold my 2006 Ford Explorer V6 which got only 12-13 around the city. Hope to get 15-17 around city in the Nissan. It hurts to swap American for foreign but they keep doing it to themselves.

Yes, you would think that. But they don't seem to do any better. The new EPA mileage readings for the 07 with CVT are only 1 mpg better than the revised (ie -- new) readings for the 06 with 6-speed. That is not much better, and differences in driving style can swamp that small difference.

Welcome Don to the "old fogies" section of this site. You are new here, but there are a few of us "seniors" (not the high-school kind) here. Based on my informal survey, I would guess that lightonthehill is our senior member, and you are close behind. I'm coming up on 68 and there are some others here who retired early and are in their late 50's.

Glad to see you went for the sportier SE version. Just because we're old doesn't mean we don't enjoy driving.

My 2007 SL

I went from a 98 to the 07 and my mileage is about 1 mpg less with the 07 so far. I will say that I have 2000 miles on the clock so I should get better as more miles are added. My 98 got an average of 25.5 with 70/30 driving and my 07 gets 24.5. I am not disappointed in that considering I went from 3.0L 190hp to 3.5L 255hp engine.

in the summer my highway gas mileage on my 2006 maxima is 33/34 and city driving is 22-24 depending on how much stop and go and traffic is involved.

i drive at moderate highway speeds with gradual accelerations (cruise around 72-76 mph)

city i drive about 5-10 above speed limit for the most part but sometimes 15-20 over but again with moderate accelerations

if you want to be fuel efficient in a maxima, you can be quite eaisly.

i drive 140 miles a day. 110 of those highway. i get around 28, 29 and occasionally near 30 mpg.

the last fill up boggled my mind though... 33 miles per gallon. the tank was 366 miles and i filled up 11 gallons only (33.27)

DONS459 was clearly responding to TorchCorvette's comment, "It hurts to swap American for foreign but they keep doing it to themselves."

I was going add a similar post if no one else did.
