Gas MPG

I got 425 miles out of the tank and filled her up with 17.5 gallons of fuel. This gives me a hair over 24 mpg. This is an extreme difference from what I was getting but again I drove like an old lady to achieve it.
During this experiment I routinely tried different speeds on the highway to see what mpg's I could get. I found that 60 mph on cruise was the best and at that speed I was only getting 27.3 mpg. I'm baffled at how some of you are able to get 35 mpg on the highway!

BTW, I claimed my free tank of gas from the dealer this morning (brought in about 10 miles beyond --- distance to empty and they gave it back to me full. I'm sure Nissan frowns on this, but for $50+ bucks of gas I don't really care. They earned good marks anyway on the last service visit.) Now its back to granny driving, lol. Fortunately the CVT lets you do that and still be one of the quicker ones away from the traffic lights.
Side note - while waiting for them to fill the car, I got my first close-up look at an Altima coupe. Nice looking car, even the low-ball 2.5S they had in the showroom. BUT..... the knuckleheads had a $4000 "market adjustment" over list tacked on the car. Its not THAT nice.... certainly would never pay $29k for a 4cyl Altima. They are out of their minds. PLUS they started charging for coffee in the customer lounge. Guess they gotta pay for the "free" gas the give out to buy good Nissan customer survey results.

I wrote that I use the cruise on the hwy.
Using the cruise on the hwy @ 60mph gets me a hair over 27 mpg. There's not a whole lot more I can do to get any better so...

I get about 27 mpg on the interstate (26 to 28 mpg) using the cruise and going between 70 and 80 mph. If I have a head wind the mileage is less and a tail wind has allowed me to get 30 mpg on occasion. I have just over 62 K miles on the odometer.
probably not the wind

While I don't know if it makes a difference or not, perhaps the tires increase the mileage (?). I previously have Continental (OEM) tires, and now I have Michelin Hydroedge tires. I would think that tire companies probably would want to know mileage data comparing their product to competitors, but I doubt the results would be published unless the results were favorable to a given product.
I have about 72K on the odometer.

is this
I own a 2007 Maxima SL with everything except navi and get about 24/18mpg in highway (70-80mph)/city (35-45mph) with 60% hwy driving. Note that I have only about 600 miles on it. In the city I drive very conservatively, seldom letting the RPM go above 2k. When I see a yellow/red signal, I let the car deccelerate for a while (by taking my foot off the gas pedal but not pressing the brake) and then brake the car slowly.
From the day I bought my car, I noticed that when my foot is neither on the gas pedal nor on the brake, the car deccelerates until around the speed of 15-10mph after which it accelerates a little unexpectedly and of course undesirably. The car is not on cruise control. It seems that some base RPM is catching up with the residual speed and making the car accelerate. Is this a problem with my car or is this normal with all new Maximas? Is this a problem with the CVT? Does this have anything to do with high fuel consumption?
