Cold air box for Maxima
I saw an Altima with a cold air box, courtesy of Kamski, and I was inspired to design and build my own. I bought a sheet of steel, tin snips, a 3 1/4" hole saw and went to work.
First, I used a piece of cardboard to design the basic pattern.
Second, I traced the cardboard onto the steel and cut out the pattern using tin snips. I used hole saw to cut hole.
Third, I fine tuned the shape with a bench grinder.
Here is what I got:

Next, I installed weatherstripping on the very sharp edges.
I bolted the air filter assembly and shield to the MAF sensor :

Final product:

Testing tomorrow.

Hella...
Way cool man... I made something similar on my 4th Gen Maxima. Kinda isolates the noise too...High five on the black Headlights too..way too scared to try it myself.
If anyone has a white Maxima, and has the headlights painted white, please send me a link sometime...

nice work
i'm always skeptical about those 'cold air' boxes. i'd imagine heat can still penetrate around it somehow, the air within the box and engine area won't be that big of a difference.

I forgot to mention that a few weeks ago, I cut out the right side of the OEM air scoop which sits over the radiator. For some reason Nissan blocked the right side. I unblocked it so it allows more air into the air filter area.

Unfortunately, I did not have this cold air box installed at Lone Pine. I am also looking for an air filter that has more of an open element in the front and is not blocked off like my Stillen filter. That way, the air from the opened up scoop is flowing directly into the filter.

After a few weeks with the air box, I'm pleased with it. I noticed today in our 100+ degree weather that the air box shield it hot to the touch, but the air filter assembly is nice and cool.

I actually have to do a litle trimming. By the way, if anyone is interested in my template, I can photocopy it and send it. I works on the Stillen short ram intake. Whats interesting is that it is quieter on the inside of the car, but has the same lovely noise on the outside.
deus...great job on the air box...i noticed that your foam insulation piece that surrounds the stock air scoop is disintegrating, as is mine...do you think this piece should be replaced or just leave as is...thanks for your imput...

Thanks for doing this mod! This is a great one. Also..cutting out the factor air intake looks like it works well too! I'll have to look into that one as well as replacing the cheap foam seal around it. Thanks! Let me know on the template!

Right now, I'm not too hip on the new body style of the Passat. It was unique before...now it's just there. But it has more HP than previous versions though...
