Steering Problem Now, when will it end ?!?!?!

Lets add another one to the list of 04's suck. I am driving down a straight road last night and notice that my steering wheel is turned 90degrees to the left, so i go around some turns and get on another straight road and the steering wheel is 90degrees to the right. The steering feels fine when turning. WTF is this!!!!! i though these were soposed to be good cars.

04 SE maxima 60,500miles
-ABS wont turn off, had to clip the fuse
-Front struts knocking like crazy
-Goodyear tires, sidewalls dry-rotting
-Steering wheel timing going out of wack.

Anybody looking to buy a silver 04' maxima, looks beautiful and engine runs great.

Don't give up man!

Let's see if we can eliminate some of these for you. The engine is bullet proof, it's the 'other' junk that will frustrate you.

ABS won't turn off:
Would have dealership look into this. This isn't the first time I've heard of this. I don't recall the resolution that came of this.

Front struts knocking like crazy:
There is a recall for this. Take it in and let them handle it.

Goodyear tires:
Plain and simple, they stink. Goodyear knows about this, but the best they will do is prorate the tires for you to get some more tires.

Steering issue:
Take it in, don't even play with this.

Did you buy this new? If you bought used, my sincerest of hope is that you did a little bit of homework. I don't mean this as a slam, just wishful thinking. Some of these issues may have been avoided in advance. I know that a lot of us would gladly have helped you.

I am in the same situation, in that I did my homework on the engine. That was it. Anything else (Bose, chrome strips...e.tc.....) I was on my own! I had to learn the hard way also.

Good Luck My Friend,
Swee

Are you the guy who had the ABS actuator issue? Just clipped the wires so no ABS now bc its not covered?

Thats what I thought too until the long block was replaced at 36K miles on my 2004 Maxima. Nissan has a bullet proof warranty though.

Hahaha, yeah my rear pre-cat got sucked into the motor, so nissan is swapping out my motor within two weeks, thats why I bought the headers. Dont want the same issue again.

Beleive me swee, if you think this engine is bullet proof, your in for a shock when the first one goes. Remember this nissan is made in Tenessee, Smyrna plant.... right near the Jack Daniels factory.

"HAWD DIIGYTY DAWWWWG!! AWWW SHUCKS I WENT AND FORGOTEM SCREWS AGAIN, a well its a nissan not a Mercedes".

Oh man, now I'm spooked. Not just because they're "Made in America", but because they are likely made by sloshed assembly line workers in the south no less. Wait a second......What's my location again?

So what in our cars is made in Japan? Wipers?

Ok, i fixed the problem. The knocking that i though was the shocks and the messed up steering was really my "Rack & Pinnion" flopping around in the engine bay. The drivers side bolt (about 14mm dia x 4" long) must have came loose and fell right out, so the passanger side band clamp was doing its best to hold it to the frame. I cannot believe that its came loose and just fell out.

Everybody should check this on their car, it located on the back side of the frame under your feet when driving. Very easy to access and tighten. This is very dangerous and will send you off the road if it comes loose and you hit a bad pothole!!!!!!!!!!!
