Urgent!!! I dont know what this is!?

What up peeps...

I kept forgetting to post this. I have no idea what this is hanging from the bottom of my car... Looks like it can be serious but I dont know. I just dont want to drive and all of a sudden I am driving like the damn flinstones or something. Any clues on what it is and how much to fix?

Can anyone tell if this is gonna cost an arm and a leg to fix? And what is this??

had the same problem on my car. i ran over some trash in the road. I am not 100% positive but i am close to certain it help with air circulation. it helps pull cool air up into the engine bay. useless piece of sheet metal. i removed mine. i wouldnt worry about it.

I have one guess. Do you have an automatic transmission? There is a shovel-like scoop that collects air and directs it up around the back of your transmission. It helps to cool it.

Some people, especially lowered ones, are catching it on speed bumps, driveway entries, and other 'bumps in the ground'. I will try to find a picture of what I think it, and show you what it should look like. I'm not sure that 'repair' is in order, as in, if it is what I think it is, you can take a hammer and gently tap it out.

I WOULD NOT remove it though. It is designed to cool your tranny, are you sure that removing that is a good idea? If you should have tranny issues and take it in, even if your issue isn't related to the scoop, it will still offer Nissan a reasonable arguement. I just cringe when I have read in this thread and past threads, about people pulling it off, or hammering it up against the bottom of the car. To me that is a foolish thing to do. That piece does serve a purpose.

To each his own....

My 2 cents....

Not a 6th gen owner. but been around them a fair bit.

It looks more like a useless peice of sheetmetal, like some form of splash gaurd. or some basic reinforcement. when you do small damage like that, if theres no instant effects on the car. nothing will happen

my advice, take a hammer and smack it back into place. doesnt look like something that will have any harmfull effects

If Swee is correct, the effect of not getting this extra trannie cooling will take a while to show up (and it may never show up). But when you have a trannie issue, Nissan will say that the trannie did not get the proper cooling they designed into the Max.

The real fix is a manual trannie -- they don't need extra cooling -- just my 2 cents (which I've spread around this site). The CVT is an even bigger heat generator than the 4 or 5 speed auto trannie -- but I've preached enough.

Thanks!!

I do recall hitting a speed bump pretty hard. So all I have done is pull it down farther then it should be? No tranny issues at all right now. Car is doing great. So I mean... Should I just leave it hanging there or maybe bend it in slightly so it can still catch air?

Have you had any problems with your tranny after taking it off? Is that single bolt the only thing holding it in place? Thanks for the help homies!!

No means to thread jack but i too have that 'bent' metal under there aswell. But yours has something holding on to it while mines doesn't has anything.

If you can take a clear picture of what is being held on by that piece it would help me alot. Thanks!

Why would NISSAN go through designing and installing this shield if it's useless? If not for cooling the tranny, maybe to reduce the temperature around the primary CAT or firewall. Without it, IMO, you will shorted the life of a component, something that may only show up years later.

When I had the cracked exhaust bracket replaced, the dealer threw out this piece. I didnot bother to ask them why, since it has to serve some purpose. So far no issue here.

This piece of metal is so easily bent if nissan wanted it to be a usefull element in cooling the design would be better and more sturdy. not some flimsy p.o.s sheet metal cooling system. like i said in my intial post i would say its 99% useless and as a technician at a respective car dealership that this piece is not usefull. i dont work for nissan and wouldnt take my word on it but i work for a company that owns both acura and nissan dealerships and talk to the techs at nissan and they say the same thing i say. so heh do what you feel. Rip it off. or keep it. heh

Muyrec, I believe that's similar to mine, but then, I have a manual tranny, so it makes sense that mine doesn't have that piece..

did both the 4 speed and 5 speed auto's have it?

When I was taking the car back and forth to the dealer about the heat shield rattling, my dealer sawed that thing off. Ever since then, no rattles at all. Don't know if that piece was the cause.

Cool Cool.

So there are 2 sides to this coin flip. That comes down to which is correct?

A: The piece is completely useless and can be discarded

OR....

B: The part place a role in the "cooling field" of the vehicle and needs to be bent back in place.

But majority of the post on this thread say its useless.

But.... Nissan must have added that in for a reason right?

So I guess I will bend mine back in when I can. I am just glad that it is nothing serious though. Thanks fellas!!!

No biggie. Thanks for the help though. I think i got the name down. It's called 'Front pipe Mount' or 'front exhaust tube hanger' as the manual says. Gonna take a trip down to the dealership and see what they can tell me about it.

There is one flaw with this line of logic;

So because something is needed, Nissan will only use quality parts, and not opt for the cheap ones? Look at the fitment of these cars.......Struts were needed and yet, early 6th gens were blowing them......tires are a necessity and yet, the Goodyear Eagles are garbage and cheap (quality here).....

Sorry Swee. I have an early 04 (bought May of 03) and after 4 years and 62 K miles am still using the original struts. Guess mine were not the crap that some other 04s got. I know I'll eventually have to replace them, probably before 100 K miles.

You are certainly right about the Goodyear Eagles. My Michelin Pilot Sports are so much better -- and they work well in snow, which the Eagles did not do.
