Battery crud!!
Battery crud!!
Whats up guys..listen, this morning coming from work i see this honey standing with jumper cables by her car. Usually i dont give jumps but....anyway i lift the cover to the positive terminal and there's all this crud and corrosion around it. I felt stupid with her looking at this $hit but i still gave her a jump..of course. Question is what do you guys think would be the best way to get rid of this stuff on the terminal? Thanks in advance.
probably licking it up.
just kidding its just dry battery acid corrosion just wipe it off try not to get any in your eyes or mouth? dry paper towl will do great! anyway man with a car that nice i dont think you need to be worrying about what the battery terminal acid looks like UNDER THE CAP.

Couple of things:
1) Clean up as best possible, using wire brush preferrably
2) Spray terminals with Anti-Corrosion spray, you can get a can at walmart, autozone, wherever
3) Get felt discs that sit around the terminal and re-spray with anti-corrosion spray
Also, might want to check and see if the seal around the terminal is bad. I used to work for Interstate Batteries, and we would have times when that seal has gone bad, so acid will seep up around the terminal and make that corrosion. Just check it by tugging on the terminal with some pliers to see if anything seeps up when you tug on it. Don't go too crazy, you should be able to tell right a way.
Hope this helps.

I just did this the other night and it worked great:
Put baking soda into a cup with HOT water. Then just dip/soak the terminal(battery disconnected of course!) and it will foam away the corrosion. After 2-3 times changing the water/soda, I used an old tooth brush to scrub off any corrosion I could still see. Then I just coated everything with dielectric grease and put new terminal pads on.
Not real long ago, I just scrubed the terminals with a wire brush and put new pads on, so I hope this lasts a bit longer.
Good luck!

Tip of the day: Soda such as Coke and Pepsi does a good job of disolving battery corrosion. Also if you place a penny right next to each of the terminals on the battery, the corrosion will actually stick onto the penny due to the copper.
I also use baking soda in water and flush the area a number of time while scrubbing it with a brush. Just make sure you clean all off cuz the acid will eventually corrode whatever it touches. I prefer not to use grease to cover the metal terminals as it attracts dirt easier. I just wash my engine compartment when I wash my car or alternating washes which includes washing the battery. By the way, did you know that if your battery isnt cleaned off, it can actually be shorting out because the stuff on the surface of the battery carries asmall amount of current which shortens battery life. Dont believe me? Well take a volt meter, put the red wire on the + side of the battery, and the black wire on the surface of the battery. How many volts, or maybe millivolts does it read? If there is any reading, u better clean ur battery more often.
Hmm, using penny as sacrificial node, interesting!
