The previous 3.0 and 3.3 drove and sounded better, not faster but I'd take an ES330 over an ES350 and my father has an ES350
When my 04 was new in the summer of 03, people would ask if the engine was running (when it was) -- because it was so smooth and quite. Now that I have 64 K miles on her, the engine makes a little more noise and the idle is not quite as smooth as it was when new.
But the engine is still smooth and powerful.
The Ford 3.5 L engine was supposed to be a copy of the VQ engine (from a source who knows), but Ford cheaped-out on the engine design, and the engine is not the same -- nor near as good as the VQ.

I have to get mine back to nissan. I'm just about out of my powertrain warranty and my motor doesn't idle smoothly at all and my tranny (auto) is shifting poorly to say the least. The 2-3 shift is just plain awful. Last dealership i took it to tried feeding me crap like i need to spend $100 for a throttle body cleaning and some other upsold bullsheit. Its an 04 with 39k miles. Always had oil/tranny changes regularly. Angers me slightly
When the car was new, you could not hear the engine idling, even with the windows open. It was extremely quite.
Next time you go buy a new car, test drive a similiar model off the used car lot, gives you an idea of what to look forward to
