Transmission Problem

Hey,

I seem to be having an issue with the tranny and was wondering if someone can help me out. After about 20 minutes of driving, I feel an ample amount of " jerkingness " when I start breaking. For example, when I'm slowing down and the car is switch gears, I would feel a major jerk while it switches gears. Also, when I begin to accelerate and right before it would switch gears, it would over rev and then switch gears. Like you would hear it over rev and then the transmission would grab and it then just shoots off.

PS. This is only when the engine is Warmed up. Not when its cold. Someone told me it can be the motor mounts / transmission mounts ?

Is my tranny on the way out the door ?
I'm currently at 37k miles and I still have the power-train warranty so we'll see how that goes.

I have a similar problem, they said it's the motor mounts, I gotta bring it in soon to be replaced.

It deffinitly doesn't sound like a motor mount problem. Your gears have absolutly nothing to do with the motor mounts. if you are feeling a jerking I recommend having them "dealer" drop your pan and check things out. If not you will end up like me and blow out 2nd and 3rd gear while driving which sucks ***. You have a warrenty and that's what matters. take advantage. Make sure they have in writing everything even if it is a small complaint for legal purposes later. Start documenting phone calls and type something up and take it in to the dealer describing your situation. they might look at you kinda crazy but 3500 dollars for a tranny is crazy. CYA good luck. Also you might want to try disconnecting the battery for at least 15 min and then drive it around in "D" for a while real slowly to let the CPU learn your driving patterns. I had the same problem with my last tranny and they denied it being the problem and tried to pawn it off on the motor mounts and even say it's normal. then the car blew 2nd and 3rd gear slammed into 5th gear and until I got home and shut it off and restarted it I had only 5th. I restarted it and had 1st 2nd and 4th and 5th. 2nd was rough though.

As I can see, alot of people are having tranny problems.

I wrote "2004 maxima transmission problems" in google and I get a crapload of ppl complaining of hard shifts or jerki9ng between gears.

Um?

"
I have an 04 maxima with 63,000 miles on it and it also jerks between 1st and 2nd gear. very noticeable. I think Nissan is aware of this and is doing nothing to honor these headaches. My first and last Nissan."

What do you guys think about it?

Why do you wanna buy a 2004 one? Its the first year of the sixth generation, so there might be more problems. Why don't you look for 2005 or 2006 maximas too?

Not all 2004 were first year maxis.

They started selling 04 maxis in 8/03 and most things were changed/fixed after 6/04. When I go to the dealer and ask for part he always tells me that I should ask for 05 parts because the car was built after 6/04 and it uses identical parts as 05 rather then "1st generation of 04s" if I can say it that way.

There is the 04 with 4-speed tranny and then there is the 04 with 5-speed tiptronic trannies.

WOW! How many times are you gonna ask the same question in one thread??? I counted at least 4. LOL

Have you searched?

I also noticed my transmission starting to jerk a little during shifts. I have about 66k miles, I did the tranny flush(on time), and I pretty much drive my Maxima normal.

I have this same problem. Driving to work for about 30 mins the trany started to slip from 2-3 and it would rev real high before it would grab the gear and jerking in between gears.
I have an 05 with 35k on it. Took it to the dealer and they did a trany flush and replaced one of the motor mounts.

They told it was fine and all it needed was the trany flush! The next day on the way to work same sh*t! Took it back and now they have had my car for 7 days waiting to get a new trany from Nissan.

Question, how do they calculate the 5 years warranty?

Like if I buy a 2004, is it until 2009, or it's based on the purchase date?

How can I know that date?

Do I need proofs on paper or it's registered somewhere?

Thx

I had the same jerky issue between 1st and 2nd. Took the beast to Nissan and fought with the stealership's best. They finally took me up on it and I had a bent and broken motor mount@! warranty ftmfw. What a chore though man... getting those bastards to do anything is impossible nowadays...

i have an 2004 max with 90k on it, and only when it downshift from 3rd to second usally while going around a turn o corner i get that hard shift slight over rev. but if i feather the gas no problems. I was curious about my tranny also. I just changed the trans fluid 3 days ago and have not noticed the problem since, even if i let it shift from 3rd to 2nd by itself and mash the pedal no hard shift with new fluid. i have about 40k on my tranny fluid. 2004 takes 4 quarts of matic K. do that , its really cheap to do on your own, one 3/8 wratchet and draid, then pour 4 quarts into the dipstick tranny tube and your good. see if that works for anyone.

I seem to have that same exact issue when it shifts from 3rd to 2nd. But I had my tranny flushed at 35K miles which was just 20K miles ago.

I know it may seem like maximas have a lot of problems but lets face it.

A lot of people find this forum when they look for a fix to their problems. So we all kind of converge in one place with lots of problems, fixes, ideas, mods. yada yada yada.

Looking at my maxie, I would probably not buy another one....but...looking at my brothers maxie, he had a single problem in the 2.5 years he owns it.

I just wasn't lucky. das all

It would be interesting to know the average tranny life of auto transmissions among all auto makers.

This is where the dealer is your friend. Dont just drain the tranny fluid...you need the complete flush and complete change. Its worth the money (this is hard for me to say) at the dealer and if you ever have warranty issues, its under file that you did the scheduled maintenance.

Hey Trans fixed. Replaced with a new trans. They told me that nissan is having a lot of problems with their tranys. He said they dont want to do a recall because it would cost them to much so they are dealing with them as they come in.

I picked up mine last friday and there were three more nissans in line for a trany.

Feels like when I first go it out of the dealer!!! Smooth!!!!!

I agree with that comment. I've also always been advised NEVER to purchase a 1st year of ANY model. It seems as if that was good advice. My '06 is running great, but only 33k on it as well. I feel you poor bastards...

Is the tranny that they put in the same tranny that was there before?

I mean, is it a revised tranny, or they are just putting a new, crappy one in, that will fail just like the first one?

I've got the same problem, the dealer says that it's normal (but I know it's not - this is a new thing). I've got my 60,000 mile maintenance scheduled for Monday, so I'll make another complaint then.

Good to see some of you guys getting yours replaced.
