According to the pics, at start up probably not at all because it's a little radiator. No movement, no cooling I think. In the winter

If I can figure out a cooler that will work, I will take some before and after temps off the dipstick and see if the temp actually drops. Check out that pic on the Stillen site (you gotta click on the little wrench) and you will see what I mean. I was kinda thinking it might not be affective, not that it would over cool.

Heck, does someone know what the operating temp on the tranny is anyway?

Well, I've got the car back. They replaced my broken tranny with a remanufactured one. Totally charge on my ticket was like $3,500. Much lower than I expected, I wonder if it would be higher if I was paying for it.

The tranny felt kind of "tight" (if that makes any sense) when I drove it home. I drove it to work and back a couple of times, it's starting to feel like normal again. I haven't really romped on it yet though, I'm just giving it some time settle in. Dealer recommended changing the fluid at 30k instead of 60k. I'll be doing that.

As far as the tranny cooler is concerned, it looks like it's a no go as we don't have tranny fluid lines to connect to.

My transmission shifts fine under normal driving conditions, and even under hard acceleration but at times when it down shifts upon acceleration it will really hit hard into the lower gear. it doesn't slam or make any noises, but it does hit pretty hard, not very smooth at all. It's like if you are driving a manual, rev the engine in neutral and then slam it into second at 35-40. Anybody have input on this?

Are the tranny problems mostly with the 5 speed transmission?

I had a 2004 Maxima SL with the gated shift...it was such a lemon that they bought back my car after only barely 81/2 months! They put me in a 2005 SE and gave me all sorts of extras...The transmission failed after 10K Miles! Anyway so far so good on the 2005 SE hope it stays that way...knock on wood!

I have a 2004 SE with a 5 speed auto. When shifting into reverse it hits pretty hard (going from park or from drive to reverse) . Has anyone had a similar issue with this problem and if so do you know what to do for it?

I've been changing (3 quarts) my trans fluid every 30k miles and its been nasty. Its dark and it stinks. I haven't had any trans problems yet, but I'm increasing the frequency of changes to 15k miles. Part of the problem too is that you can only drain 3 out of a total of, I think, 14 quarts. Not cheap either at $13 a quart.

The factory service manual states that the 5 speed automatic trans axle holds 7 3/4 qts.
including the torque converter.

I have a 2004, and my transmission has been replaced. Such bad slippage, it was getting quite dangerous.

I have the exact same problem. It makes terrible clunking noises and shakes the car whenever i shift from park to reverse or reverse to drive. It also has late shifts between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. A replacement (remanufactured) through the dealer was about $3400 (average cost, i called 4 different dealerships) and only came with a 12 mo./12k warranty. I am having AAMCO rebuild it for $3800 and they incldue a 3yr/36000k warranty. I wish i had gotten the extended warranty now. who would have guessed a 6th Gen car would have a tranny go out at 70k miles???

replaced

I voted "Tran Problems" but probably should have voted "Tran Replaced" as the transmission is currently being rebuilt.

****, if mine ever goes out, then I may as well spend the equivalent amount on a "built transmission," instead of the factory one.

I just had my second transmission replaced in my 04 Max. The first was at 24,000 (had terrible slippage) (under warranty) and now at 74,000 (cost 4k). I've had quite the experience with this Max. I'm actually thinking about trading it in for somethin else.

You 2nd tranny? And it only lasted 50k. Wow, I guess when they have bad trannys they have bad trannys. I'm hoping my rebuilt lasts more the 50k. The only thing I am really going to do different is have the fluid changed well before the mfg recommendation.

my 05 has been jumping from 1st to 2nd since I bought it new but not every day. I brought it to the dealership and of course, the car worked perfectly. I have 79,000 miles on it now. it still does it from time to time especially if I am going 20-25 mph the shifting up and down is very jerky. I hate it and I am waiting for it to just die then I will spend a fortune getting it fixed.

Yes, sometimes the CVTs fail unfortunately. But it is not at an alarming rate. Check out the Murano forums, for e.g. http://www.nissanmurano.org/forums/s...?threadid=2002, http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/WebX?14@@.f133968/0, etc.

Here are some 07-08 Maxima CVT problems (but couldn't find many since they haven't been long enough, I guess):
http://forums.freshalloy.com/showthread.php?t=161947
http://forums.freshalloy.com/showthread.php?t=162435

The last one I don't think is a problem but just the way the CVT behaves, at least partially. For example, when cruising, releasing the gas pedal and then getting back on the gas (not aggresively) there is sometimes a sort of "kick" sensation. I think this is normal for the CVT and found it in all the three 07 Maximas I have driven.

THEY WRE TRYIN TO BS ME SAYIN EXHAUST GIVES MORE POWER TO THE WHEELS SO MY TRANI WENT. I LAUGHED SO I ACLLED NISSAN HEADQUARTERS THEY TOLD ME THEY SHOULD WARRANTY IT. ITS JUST EXHAUST WHICH HAD NO EFFECT ON TRANI .SO I WAS CALLIN FLATBED TO TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE THEN THEY CHANGED THEIR MINDS AND DECIDED TO FIX IT IT WAS REAL FUUNY. ok.. so I can't post new topics since I'm the 'new guy' but here's my story... bought my 04 se like a few months ago w/ 1k warranty and thats it- got it for a steal because of the high mileage (95K miles) and I only paid like $11000 for it.. Now I'm at 99K miles and I noticed in the last thousand miles like maybe 2 or 3 times the transmission SLAMMEd into 3rd gear.. and freaked me out so I drove her real nice. Well today I may have f'd it up since I was in a rush to work and someone decided to make a right turn in the middle of the road and I went to pass around by punching the gas. Well nothing happened for a second and then BAMMM and CHIRP the car takes off.. I was like oh crap.. and then after that it went straight to 5th gear I think at 35 mph.. so I was freaked.. the next few miles it would not come out of 5th gear- I ended up pulling over and turning the car off completely- restarting and then the check engine light came on and it was in 1st gear. Drove away and it had a rough shift into 2nd and then into 3rd and then went straight to 5th. From there on out, it only went to 3rd and wouldn't go any further down.. Now i'm here at work buggin out! What do i do? I heard something about a TCM?? Any Input is appreciated!!

the transmission didn't slip- it just slammed and then got stuck in 5th gear ... and it only would go back down to third gear.. there was no slipping noise or grinding or anything

The dealer replaced it with a rebuild/refurbished one. From outside it looks brand new. According to a friend they rebuild them from scratch and only re-use the shell.

I spoke to another friend who owns tranny parts wholesaler business and he said that valve bodies are to blame. He said that they have been getting a lot of phone calls for this tranny within past year.

Another thing he said that I found interesting....change the fluid every 10K or don't change it at all, ever.

Which Synthenic and type did you go to and is it recommended for the Auto?

The fluid in a manual trannie is much different from (and heavier than) the fluid in an auto trannie -- the two are not compatible.

I used Redline MT-90 because, at the time, Amsoil had quit making the proper fluid. Amsoil now (again) makes a GL-4 (single grade) gear oil, and I will be using that when I change the fluid again at about 90 K miles.
