I've had an '08 with the CVT (rental, nailed a deer in my 4th gen) for about 1000 miles now and have averaged 24.4mpg according the computer. I'd say that's around 75% highway. But then again it's a rental so I haven't exactly been babying it either.

Bump this one because I am in the market for an 07-08 and would love some more data, some info out there shows that the CVT models suffer on mileage compared to the 04-06's......

Bump again!

I just traded in a 2005 5sa for a 2008 cvt. I do mostly city driving, occasionally highway. I've noticed no difference in mileage between the two models. I averaged between 18.5-19 with the 2005, and in the month I've had the 2008 I've been receiving 18.8 mpg.

All I know is I can't get more then 250 miles without the gas light coming on, and the "DTE" going to "****"...I'm guessing I get like 15..Not sure why, I don't beat on the car at all!

My mileage is fine, around 19-20 around town, but my gas light comes on around 250 miles and then I put no more than 12.5-13 gals tops in. So I am getting the gas light with 7-7.5 gals left in the tank. Drives me nuts!

This is good data, but can I ask...."Can an 08 Max really hold 20 gallons?" My car on "e" according to the computer...can only hold 15-16 gallons on a fill up. So do we have a 4-gallon reserve? My gas light always comes on after about 300 miles driven. Is this so?

Nissan did this in order to save on replacing fuel pumps, so itll say its empty but it will still have 4 gallons. Thats why you can't fill up more then 16 gallons.

Same in Houston. I can get 28 mpg in normal traffic. Unless I get the urge to nail it. Then I hear this sucking sound coming from my wallet. HAHA! I know, I know, I don't have CVT, but still, I get good mpg.

And now...the one that really surprised me...

Cruise @ 70...wind at my back...same intensity...a couple small hills...over 65 miles: 31.9mpg!!!!

CVT Maxima

The CVT trans keeps the revs higher overall vs auto.....
Mileage must suffer...... unless you're in a Prius

just found this thread tonight while i was trying to find a reason for my car being so screwed up. my gas mileage has been dropping steadily ever since i bought my 2007SE. it has 54,000 on it and right now as of last night i was getting 13.7mpg! city driving.

always local driving, never ever beat on it or "punch it". i just had the oil changed which i do every 2500 miles anyway. also just had the air filter changed. actually, when that was all changed i was still getting 14.5. it has dropped in the last 2 months over 1mpg.

this is my 2nd, and last, maxima. i will always love my original 2002 fully loaded max more than any car i have ever owned. but this one just is not anywhere near as much fun. and gas mileage on the 02 was 22.5.

any thoughts?

I drive an 07 altima se with cvt and sadly only drive 15-20miles a day to work all city driving.
Mpg has never gone past 13 and I'm lucky if I get 240miles out of a tank of gas.

Using cruise control I was getting: 27+ mpg on Highway and 16-18 mpg in the city.

well i don't have the cvt i have the 5AT.

but i get pretty much the same mpg on day to day driving.
25highway 19-20 city.

however... these are my numbers based on my normal driving style, which is mostly driving fast on the highway and accelerating quickly in the city.

I have had many chances to test out different things for economy since i regularly drive from San Diego to Sacramento. here are my numbers

If i am trying to get the absolute best MPG i drive at 60mph. I found this is the Maxima's sweet spot. Anything above 70mph will show a significant decrease. and anything below 50 will also show a significant decrease.
at 60 mph and a careful drive (mild acceleration on declines, and laying off the throttle on inclines using momentum, few lane changes, anticipating slower traffic ect... i can average 30-32 mpg from a full to empty tank. at 85mph i average about 21-23mpg from full to empty and save about 35-40 minutes of driving.

I once drafted semi's the entire way and averaged 38 MPG. i was expecting more after watching mythbusters gain an 80% increase in MPG but those numbers are only gained if your bumper to bumper and I refused to drive a 8 hour trip less than a car length from the truck, its dangerous and illegal and exhausting. but drafting is proven to work, i say your looking at prius numbers if you get a good 6 feet from the back of a truck... you didn't hear that from me..

but again, under normal driving circumstances the 5AT maxima's get about the same as the CVT
