steering column loose

I have an 04 with 96k on it and for some reason the steering column moves up and down about 2 inches. It only happens when I make a 90 degree turn... basically when I push up on the steering wheel. Has anyone ran into this problem or know what it might be or how to fix it?

Sounds like you need a new steering column. Not cheap. Hope you have an extended warranty.

but wouldn't it just be like a bearing in the steering column or something small? All the electronics in the column and everything else works fine.

is it power tilt or manual tilt?

I would say to just take the steering column cover off (very simple to do...just look for two holes on the bottom of the plastic cover, and then two more on top IIRC and it splits into two pieces) and drive around with it off to see if you can see what's up

The Nissan dealership fixed mine and there was just a bolt loose behind the cover.

I had slightly loose column that would make ticking noise when going over bumps. I had it from the get go and the dealer finally replaced it after complaining. Job was little over $1200 (covered by warranty). Mine was all power.

I would say that if the column functions OK with no noise it is just loose. You can probably remove the plastic panel under the steering column an see the two bolts that hold it in place. There shouls be two studs that point down with a bolt on them.
