Big Problem

I had 95k on my 2004 max. I had my Timing chain, chain guides, chain tentioners, and belts replaced. Then my car started to "eat" "make oil dissapear". About every thousand miles i am down a quart. I can hear the valves tappin a little or the chain rubbin a little when it gets low so i put more oil in. No Oil leaks visable while on a lift. No DTC's present or stored. Has anyone had this problem or know what is going on. EGR probems possibly ? Clogged Egr Port ? NEED SOME HELP.

you got 8k miles since you had it done and if you have not gone back to the dealer as yet then you may have to eat the cost for additionals repairs if the problem comes from a fault in there work. check your receipt and see how long the job is or was warrantied for and if still covered then head right back in to the dealer and inform them which is what you should of done from the first 1k miles that you noticed oil being lost. I've read about a guy on the 5th gen section having an oil burn problem but i think he was still warrentied and had a fight to get the engine replaced. Do a search and see what comes up.

yeah it will be tuff but don't give up try whatever you could even if it means calling up nissan or getting a lawyer invovled and tell them you are going to sue them if they cant resolve it because i know it sounds like you are grabbing at straws but right now you got nothing to lose except a couple thousand dollars for a new motor or to get it repaired. so do some research, talk to different people and see what can be done. good luck.

also at 103k you are not covered but remember you are saying it started after they did work on the engine, maybe others who have more knowledge on engines can chip in and give their opinions on the situation

What was the reason for the need to have those parts replaced? The timing parts should last a lot longer than that before they need any repairs.

Oil Consumption = bad rings just like the 5.5th gen Maximas. Hopefuly that's not your case!
My A34 eats little bit of oil too. Maybe i should switch to 10W-30 or 10W-40 oil and replace the PCV valve to see if helps or not
Just my $0.02

Welcome to the 100k miles club. I'm at 120k miles and just had my fluids, belts, pcv, and spark plugs replaced. While my car was down, I had to drive a 4cyl saturn so after driving that, my max seemed as if it was eating alot of gas.. I still avg the same MPG according to the info screen. All i need to do is clean out my k&n this weekend and hope my MPG goes up.

My car feels smooth as butter.

That's about what a normal 100k mile checkup should be for a timing chain (not belt) equipped car. That's why I buy Maxima's. My fiance's Focus crapped out right at 103k so its detrimental to replace the timing belt when the manual says so. POS car. Hopefully your power and comfort is enough to over come the mileage gain on that crappy Saturn.

I always thought that since Nissan used a timing "chain" and not a belt that it doesn't need replaced at 100,000 like a Honda that uses a belt?

Do timing chains even have replacement dates? I thought it was just inspection and replace as needed, maybe 150k+ miles. My old saturn sc2 had a chain and I traded it in at 128k miles and it ran like the day I bought it at 70k.

Ok this is what happened. I heard a noise coming from under my hood. Now mind you i know what i am talking about because i am a technician for Acura. I heard my chain slapping or rubbing on the case. So i brought it to the dealer and they replaced both tentioners, the chain guides. the belts, the chain and so on. I guess my tentioners went bad and they covered it all under warantee. So since i happen to work 50 feet from a nissan dealer that is owned by the same company i work for i have been comstantly been discussing my situation with a few techs over there and have come to the conclusion that my PCV may be bad. Since he has a few extra 3.5 motors laying around he is going to get one for me off there. Gonna change the oil and the PCV and see what happens. Most likely that is what we have determined to be the problem. If its not that then when they put my oil pan back on after the service mayby some "honda bond " or sealer clogger my EGR port internlly. so thats the scoop with that. i am trying to get as much miles out of this engine b4 i BUY a spare off my buddy who works next door at nissan. So ill keep you informed and let you know whats going on and if this fixes it.

also from the post right b4 the big one i just made.. Yes my tech friend at nissan said that a lot of 3.5 engines come back after this service. either the techs are making a mistake or something else. they dont quite know why they are coming back at this point.

The tapping you're hearing is probably the fuel injectors. the timing components wont cause oil consumption, so my guess is your car was going to start eating oil anyway. Also, why did you have that job done in the first place?

there is a nissan bulliten on all 3.5's and 4.0's on makeing t-chain noise. the plastic on cam tensioners wearout. the timing cover needs to come off and cam tensioners replaced. i've seen this on 3.5 ser altima ,a 05 4.0 path and xterra too.

the reason for the original service was due to chain noise. upon inspection and install the tentioners were bad. they covered the tentioners, chain, belts, chain guides, all under warantee at 93,000 miles. sooo i was not complaining for it was going to be needed to be done soon. then my oil comsumtion problem started. i am gonna go with pcv then mayby egr ports and if that doesnt work then mayby injectors. or ill just get a whole new motor from my buddy that works at nissan next door to my work.

The mild tapping after the engine warms up is normal I take it? Are these valves shimmed or do they have hydraulic lash adjusters? My truck and fiance's Liberty are hydraulic and they all tap no matter what oil you use. I've even tried pre-loading them with a shim, still ticks. Definitely louder than the fuel injectors, lol. I will check to see if the noise is central to the motor or offset to the timing side, but I'm pretty sure its a common sound.

Yes. The power and the comfort is definetely worth cashing out the extra $$ for gas. Now that its been a week, I'm use to getting around 23mpg compared to 38mpg..
