Goodyear RSA "recall"

I've read through most of the stickys and links on the GY RSA sidewall cracking and now i just looked at my tires when i rotated them this weekend and damned if 2 of my tires have cracked sidewalls (One of the tires has like 6 cracks in it).

My car is an 04 with about 38k. Is Goodyear going to bone me if i try to get them to do something about them?

Thanks!!

They should offer a prorated amount of 50% regardless of wear. I contacted Goodyear corporate about these piles of rubber, and they said that it isn't an admission of fault, it is their general policy to offer the standard 50%. Try your local Goodyear. What they might tell you is the same thing they told my nephew, they'll credit him the 50% towards another Goodyear tire.

Let us know what happens.

I heard its 50% towards any GOODYEAR tire. Not just any tire. Come on, they are not going to loose money to competition.

i recieved safety recall paperwork in the mail yesterday from Goodyear, saying they will replace any RSA tires for free that are cracking. I didnt call them or give them my info so they must have to send those out to anybody who has a Maxima, must have got my info thru the DMV. They claim that its not a safety issue and just cosmetic, but they strongly reccomend that you come in and let them replace them. HAHA.

I just got mine in the mail today. Funny i started this thread last week and now this. You can all thank me for it

Anyhow, i'm going to head to the local goodyear place tomorrow morning. I'm gonna ***** that i want ALL my tires replaced and with ones that don't suck like the RSA's. I'll gladly pay the difference per tire but i will refuse to pay ANY other costs (Mounting/balancing/etc). They can lick my ***** if they think i'm going spend a dime on that.

I'll post here when i get back.

I just got my 3rd set of tires today. Last time i got the eagle rsa again (all the shop had) but this time i got a set of dunlop direzzas. I paid 0 dollars. I called goodyear and complained and after about 10 phone calls i got them to pay for everything. You cant really get anywhere with the tire shops you have to deal with goodyear direct. Whatever deal you work out on the phone they call the tire shop for you. Hope this helps

you shouldn't have to pay mounting and balancing. they're telling you to give their tires back, so it's on them.. and as far as price differences, the RSA's actually run quite a bit more expensive than just about anything else, so you shouldn't have to pay a thing.

some interesting links:

news site story
consumer affairs site

waiting patiently for my letter in the mail..

speaking of the letter, does it say you need the letter? or can I just take my car to Goodyear and they'll know what to do?

NHTSA still has nothing (unless you search for the complaints, which brings up a fairly long list.)

I go my letter yesterday. I bought my Maxia used from a Nissan dealer. I already replaced my tires though. But according to the letter if you send them the receipt for the new tires and proof of the cracking they will refund your money. Fortunately, I still have the service recept where my tires were rotated and the stated that the side walls were cracking. I'll maill all this in and see what happends. I work in the auto indusrty and I bet all of the complaints they have gotten caused them to do this. I bet they have other tires on other cars with the same issues.

I take it that this issue is limited to the 04
05 yrs? Is this true, or just none yet for 06+? What gives, should I begin to worry about mine? Has anyone heard if they supposedly changed them somewhere along the line?

Man that was alot of questions!!

haven't heard of changes in the tires... seems to happen more on 04's and some 05's, but then that's probably just because of the time/mileage... I'd guess the newer ones will do it too.

maybe not.. find your receipt, or see if the shop you got them from can print another.. if this recall actually goes through, Goodyear should reimburse you.

Grr.. I went up to my local shop and they insisted that i have an appointment. So i'll be going back on Monday morning for my appointment.

I just took a look at my tires and it appears (at least on the outer facing side) there are cracks on only two of my tires. I'll be damned if they think they're only going to replace two of them. Anyone else have this situation and have them replace all 4?

make sure to check the inner sidewalls too. take pictures with points you can reference because sometimes it's hard to see them.. I know from the time the first tire showed cracks, it took about a month or two at the most for all four to crack..

As promised here it is
.

Those are the first two pages. The third page was just a form for the Goodyear store but it has my name/address/vin etc on it. Also i didn't scan the back of page two as it had instructions on how to care for your tire as if the cracking was OUR fault.

Let me know if you all have any problems getting to the file and i'll host it somewhere else.

Perhaps they don't have their VIN registered with Nissan? Thats the only way Goodyear could have gotten the list of people to mail the stuff to.

My appointment is at 3pm EST today. I'll post when i get home as to what the buttholes say. I got a feeling i'm going to be in for a fight as i know two of the tires have cracks but i can't find any on the other two. I have a feeling they're going to want to replace the two but not the others. That just isnt' going to cut it. Plus i want the tires replaced with their newer Eagle F1 all-season jobbies and not the RSA's again.

I've had my car in to the dealer, so they have my info. I still haven't gotten one though. I'll probably try printing that letter and see how it goes.

Put one cracked one on the front and one on the rear. A good shop wouldn't want non-matching tires on left and right. Might help you a bit.

Good luck with the buttholes.

Ok, so it does like they have a known date of manufacturer. Hopefully they're right about it and anything after this date will be fine.

Well i noticed on my tires (I just went and doublechecked to make sure it wasn't the beer this weekend skewing my vision) that my tires do NOT have the date code. They have the other part, but the date code isn't stamped. There's an empty spot, but no date code.

Welp that sucked. Need everyones opinion. Tech at the Goodyear place says that three of my tires have already been replaced at some point in time (I'm not the original owner, bought the max with 29k on it) as shown by the date codes on the tires. One of the tires is original and is cracking and they're going to replace. I can't really ***** and say i want all the tires replaced at this point.

Should i attempt to call Goodyear and say even though only one tire is shot that i want all 4 replaced with something other then the RSA's or will Goodyear laugh at my and hang up

That happened to me with one tire. They said that all my tires were original except 1 and I had to pay for that. I got the Nexxan's. They replaced all 3 for free including balancing..

I would push to get at least two, since you don't want two tires with different tread levels on each side.. and what's it matter if they've been changed? if they're cracking, they're cracking, and that should warrant a replacement.. you said two of yours were cracked, right?

I'd also be suspicious of them trying to BS you. Go in there knowing your stuff, and don't let them tell you how it goes. Push for your way, and it's less likely that you'll get screwed. Also, try a different shop. It's up to one person to decide if you get tires, really. Maybe someone else is having a better day.

Wolf:

Also, if you can get two tires, throw the unmatching tires card and see if you can't get some other kind of tire that's cheaper, but better (Yokohama's possibly?) The Goodyear's retail at about $250 a piece, the Yoko's are around $190 if I remember right. That might cut a chunk out of the price of the other two tires.

Good luck.

Hell on my last Max, an '00 SE, i had over 70k before i changed out my OEM tires and they still had ~30% treadlife on them. I'm not saying all tires are going to last 70k but i'd like to see at least 50k out of OEM tires on a car that's treated right.

I got about 36K out of my OEMs before they looked like slicks. You can treat your care right all you want but if the tire slips every time you take off, especially in wet condition there is wear wheather you plan it or not.
