OEM resonator

hey guys, i had some time to kill b4 work so i stopped by an exhaust shop to ask about replacing the 1' part right before it splits and they said that it would reduce ground clearance. they were quite adamant about it so i didn't argue about it. i already have the CE y pipe so my next q was replacing the 2" ID pipe from the back of the CE ypipe [2.25" ID] and make it 2.25" all the way back to the y split and use a step down [ a 2.25" to 2" reducer]. they said that the noise wouldnt be too much more if i remove the oem resonator. i was kinda disagreeing in my head waiting to get home and get you guys' feedback and input on this. i want to maintain the "sleeper" look so i am keeping the oem mufflers [maybe switching them out for the 07 but thats a diff story] and just change out the piping.

My OEM resonator was going bad i was told b/c it would make these gurggling sounds and stuff so i went to an exhaust shop and replaced the OEM resonator with a brand new aftermarket one. Thats all i got...no intake, nuthin else. Sounds 300% better. Nice purr to it with stock mufflers.

If you remove the stock resonator you will hate yourself. Some people tried it and ended up putting one back on. I ran 2.5 all the way back with no problems, I'd go somewhere else...

jsmith, you have the greddy exhaust, right? would it be an obnoxious sound or more raspy?

To be honest..i have no idea. Meineke did the work for me...so im assuming whatever resonator they stock for our cars is what went in. It really does sound sooo much better tho than factory.

hmmm. its probably a universal muffler that they welded in inline with the exhaust. did you change any of the piping size? do u have a y pipe?

Why is there a part of kinda "crushed" pipe before the resonator? it's like half a pipe, the top part is flat.

It does something, maybe. That's all I can tell you. The rest is a secret.

maxd - but as i stated above, i am wanting to maintain the sleeper look so i want to keep the oem mufflers [the oem mufflers good enough for n/a cars w/o restricting flow [very little if so]) when you did the 2.5" back from the resonator, did the pipe approaching the y split hang too low around where the heat shield is? like if you look underneath your car from the side before and after? i dont mind a little but not too much.

kryogen - its to help maintain low end tq

phil- lol!

I removed the resonator and replaced the piping with stainless all the way back with a y pipe to the two OEM exhaust....and I have had no problems and the sound is similar to a slightly quieter version of the G35 coupe. It purrs and noise is not a problem....2.5" is very recommened.

xorbit, just what i was wanting to hear. with your 2.5" piping, did you have a problem in the area where it "Y" splits in the rear with it hanging too low? i was thinking of doin 2.25" to port match with the CE y pipe and use a 2.25" to 2" reducer to the "Y" split.

If your guys' Y is the same as ours, then putting in a true Y will not really reduce much ground clearance. After all, there is a hanger mount right there, and you can just weld it a bit tighter (higher) toward the body. I have a Magnaflow 2.5" in, 2.25" out Y and it has never scraped. Definitely do NOT simply remove the resonator when you have other exhaust mods (especially with the CE y pipe), but consider replacing it with a 12640 27" and a pre-made Y, and maybe going with some magnaflow 14829s and painting the body of them black to keep the stock look you want

I have CE y-pipe, magnaflow resonator, new 2.25" piping, and stock mufflers.

rhmax, nice! you wouldnt have any pics of the new piping would you? mainly around where the y split is where it goes to the exhausts? i was curious of how much lower it would be. im pretty much wanting to do what you did. [im debating on the resonator or not]. did you get the 18" or the 22" ? total cost?

oh yeah, how far did you take the piping? to the y split or all the way to the mufflers?

Thanks larsim.

eK, I went w/ no resonator first. It was raspy at WOT. I think it was about $150 w/ 22" resonator. The pipings to the mufflers are already mandrel bent, so I had it repiped to the split. It scrapes when I have someone in the back seat. I'm not sure if it's any worse than stock pipe would.

where did you get the piping from? i was thinking of ordering some 24" 2.5" u bends from jc whitney and making one, just like i did on my civic for the inter cooler piping, down pipe, and exhaust. i do remember on civic is i had no resonator, just 2.5" back from the down pipe to the muffler. it didn't sound raspy at all but i guess that could be because its boosted? i wonder if i got one of those knockoff greddy exhausts made by top speed and cut off those mufflers, use 2 reducers to port match the exhaust to the oem mufflers?

The shop I went to had the premade pieces there. Turbochargers muffle the exhaust noise a bit.

I'm not sure if you can do any better than stock rear section since the inlets are on the outside. I thought Cattman was going to sell b-pipe for us to use w/ stock mufflers. You might want to check w/ Brian.
