Weird Problem

I wouldn't come on here asking for help if the manual would answer this. I have two lights that blink very sporatically and always at the same time. It is the "BRAKE" light and the battery light on the dash. They must be connected to the same fuse and the fuse is going bad, or there is something simultaneously wrong with the brakes and battery that would cause this.

One thing I can think of is that I spilled a little bit of oil when I was adding and some of it fell on the alternator. Other than that, I don't know what this could be.

I don't think that a little oil would cause you r alternator to go bad but it doeas sound like it's going bad you can test your alt by leaving the car running open the hood and disconnect the neg battary terminal and if the car stays running your alt is good if it dies then it's bad

sounds like it is either a cut in a wire somewhere that is grounding itself out when you hit a bump or a relay of some sort going bad. I am not sure but let me check the manual to see if I can help more.

Sounds like the altenator is shorting out. Do the test from above or if you konw someone at a shop just have check it with the meter.

ok looking at the instrument cluster warning system drawing it looks like you might have a bad diode that should only allow current one way but it allowing it to go both ways. If it was an alternator issue then you would have more issues than two leds flashing speratically. I suggest unless you want to pull your instrument cluster apart, having nissan do an electrical diagnostic about $98. They can at least pin point the issue and tell you what they recommend you do. From that point it's up to you. More than likely buying a new cluster will be their recommendation. If that's the case I recommend buying a used one or one off of ebay because the stealership will drain a wallet on something like that. good luck.

^^^ +1 what he said. I too don't think its the alternator, but to test to see if it is, startup the car, disconnect the positive battery cable while the motor is running. If the engine dies, bingo. If not, you know you got something else to deal with....

Bah, this stuff usually works itself out. I'll do the test and if it's not the alt. then screw it. I don't care about some stupid instrument cluster problem. I was really hoping it wasn't ecu problems that could lead to further headaches down the road. If it persists then I'll just cover it with electrical tape. I just thought it was an odd combination of lights to be flashing.

By the way, it didn't blink at all on the way to work today. It could have had something to do with the heavy down pours of rain we've been having.
