New tips touch bumper slightly, will it ruin it?

Ok I took out the factory tips and put it some new ones (which was a pain in the arze). They touch the bumper just slightly because when I tightened them, it seemed they all wanted to point up. I tried every which way to adjust it, but i cannot get them to not touch the bumper.

So will this ruin the bumper? like turn parts of it black or melt it?

They are just stainless steel 3 1/2 inch tips.

I would think it would damage your bumper from the heat.

I might do this, because what I noticed was that the original two pipes that come out of the mufflers are curved upward ( I guess to make the original factory chrome tips as close to the bumper as possible). Well this sucks for me because the only way I can get these new tips to NOT to touch the bumper is to have them stick out...which I hate, but I had to do that for now.
How hard is it to bend the 2 exhaust hangers? This is my very first mod...not on this car only but any car in general Don't want to ruin anything.

They look nice, can you still see the OEM pipe on the inside or do these cover them up? What is the product name, price and how hard was it to swap the OEM's out. I hate my OEM tips and I'm not putting money into new mufflers now just for the tips.

You're going to laugh but I actually bought them from Wal mart. I don't know if all Wal mart carry the same exact products, but if you go to Wal Mart in the auto accerssories section, look for "Pilot PM-552wk." pic below
http://img369.imageshack.us/my.php?i...walmarthb0.jpg

It is a round slanted resonated stainless steel exhaust tip. They are 12 bucks each. 3 1/2 inch circle so it'll be 1/2 inch bigger on each tip. I figured buying it at Wal Mart will eliminate all the shipping head aches and waiting time...also if I loose one on the road, I can just go back to wallie world and get another.

Taking the factory Tips was a headache being that this is the fist time I have ever messed with anything like this. But I made a little video showing the original tips and the easiest way to do it, because that inner smaller pipe that you see...it's not the actual pipe, it is part of the tip (kind of misleading when you're trying to take it out lol). You'll see what I mean if you click below.

Link for video here. http://img532.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tipaj9.flv

The reason why you cannot see the original pipe from the muffler is simply because I shaved off an inch and a half off. You will still have plenty of piping, don't worry. The guy at the muffler shop just burned it off; he did it for free... but it was messy. I had to get my own cutter and shave it clean, now it looks nice. So it's in there, but you cannot see it because I just cut it. I think it looks funny when you can see the smaller pipe inside the tip; now it makes it look like the new tips are the size of the piping

Because the smaller pipes coming out of the muffler are curved and not identical, getting all 4 lined up perfectly and not touching the bumper was a biaatch. A lot of adjustments with the bolts and stepping back to see if they're lined up. The only way I could get them to not touch the bumper is to have them jout out a little bit beyond the bumper line. So now it looks like a 16 yr old's honda civic so I might have to do what the guy above said and lower the muffler. I prefer the factory look, nice and tucked and clean.

hey to respond to the bending its simple. its l shaped or something. its been a few years since i did mine. but just grab a nice set of pliers and slightly move them down towards the ground. or tap on them with a hammer slightly just to move the L exhaust hanger down a tabe. rehang the exhaust rubbers on the hooks and see where the tips sit now. its easy

Wow man, I love how they look. I'm actually in the process of doing this, but the tips I bought are oval-shaped, and I've been thinking how to do it so that you won't see an opening if you look at the muffler straight in...

Also as you can see on this pic, I have the rear stillen body piece, so the OEM tips look too much tucked in... I think I'll be putting the inner ones farther out so that it looks like its "pushing" the car!

Hi! Welcome to Walmart where we meet all your custom needs. I want, so bad, to just quit paying tythes to the walmart gods. Ugghhh... I'd prefer to support local business but of course the prices are hellacious! I can't believe they sell tips... Did you find them by the spinning hub caps?? They look good nonetheless.

Thanks. for the explanation. I went under there, and knowing me, I would prolly accidentally ruin something lol So I just set the tips further out, 1 inch with the inner and 1 1/2 inch from the bumper line. This made them not touch the bumper and there is a nice little 1/4 inch gap...

Wakkus ...I need the stillen kit for the rear just like that! do they still make those?

KC2010 - If there was a local business who sold these tips, I would jump on them I am not a huge supporter of Wal Mart, but they always find ways to have things that I want, I am easily suckered in. Oh they didn't have the spiining hub cabs at Wal Mart, but they did have the the chain links license plate borders

btw...how do i post pix directly on the thread...i tried but it just left it blank

The tips are exactly 8 inches from end to end. Where did you find your tips? I am sure they come in different lengths, but mine were 3 1/2 diameter, circle, and 8 inches long exactly..from Wal Mart.
I finally got mine to look as perfect as they're going to get. I looked at the L hanger, but I decided to just have them jut out just a bit so they won't touch the bumper. I managed to get a 1/4 inch space, I hope that's enough, cause those suckers are f-ing hot after a drive!

Thanks for the info. I definitely put them down a notch. I Still couldn't locate the L shaped hangers on the mufflers. Is it towards the inner or the outter part of the bumper?

I was looking around for tips, but the ones on PepBoys are too big, and they would touch if put together. The ones that fit are slanted, so the opening is smaller if you measure vertically, but the same size horizontally. I bought them, but they have this clamp that has to hold them in place, and you can see it from outside! That's not what I had in mind...

Pix would be awesome
Clamps that hold them together...what do you mean? If it's bolt on, those clamps are kind of inevitable, obviously they have to bolt on somehow but even at that, those are on the inside so I am not really sure what this is.

hmr,
How did you get the tips off. I tried everything from pulling at it to trying to twist it free but it wont budge. Was it a PITA for you? Any suggestions? Also I had sent you a PM with questions, please answer. Oh btw I gt the same tips at Meijer in MI for 11.50 each. Measures 8 1/2" longitudenal and 3 1/2" horizontal.
Thank you

I replied your pm.
When you are looking at the original tips, note that the inner circle you initially see if ALSO part of our stock tips. Also don't be mislead by the pieces of metal that connect the bigger part of the tip to the smaller inner part. Those pieces are what holds the smaller and bigger part of the tip. Those aren't clamps that attaches the tip to the pipe.

The inner part of the original tip is just slightly bigger than our 2 inch pipe and it fits snuggly...actually very tight, with the pipe. It just goes over the pipe..hmm like a condom. , you just have to pull it off.
Just put some lubricant on the INSIDE of the original tip. Just place your hand until you feel the back of the tip and start twisting it and pulling it towards you. It's on there very tight.

Hope this helps. I don't know if that flash video I uploaded on imageshack still works, but that should explain it better and it has visual so it's easier to see.
