Play in Rear Left Hub
Play in Rear Left Hub
Recently noticed while doing my brake job that I have small play in my rear left hub assembly that holds rotor and wheel. I spun the hub by hands and I can see my rotor spins but with little play. I thought it could be because of lug nuts were not tighten correctly but that was not the case and finally I can say my hub definitely has small play. My bearings looks tight and does not shake during shaking tire from 0 to 180 degree and 90 to 270 degree.
I came to find this because my car was making wooss...wooss...wooss...noise and it was synchronized with the speed.
Check the part 43202 here that has a play http://www.courtesyparts.com/betasit...2754_2757.html
What should I do? does my noise absolutely because of this play in hub?
What exactly could be the problem? hub or bearings?
Is it hard to change rear hub assembly at home? what instruction should I follow?
Appreciate for any reply before stealer charge me arms and legs.
Note: Always have had tighten my lug nuts using torque wrench with specifications.

Do me a favor and take your rotor off, and lay it on a flat table and see if there is a wobble there. Hubs are very hard to destroy unless your car fell into a crater. i bet your rotor is warped at the hub.
Thanks for your input but I have 2 rotors, one is existing one and another one is brand new (I bought one new rotor considering like what you have said about warped rotor case.) Both rotors shows play while spinning by hands on hub. My hub flat serface is also pretty clean and there are no debris there. Also that whoop.....whoop...whoop...whoop...noise contributes using either rotor. I can not say how hub could have damaged but sure my car encountered normal potholes on the road in normal driving regardless of how much I try to avoid.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
noticed what i thought was tire noise (as in a separated belt) at highway speed...took car to dealer...left rear hub (wheel bearing) assembly needed to be replaced (2004 purchased 3/2003: 4.75 years old 42,000mi)...covered under 5yr/60,000mi warranty...

Hi nysmaxima,
You experienced the same problem like what I have right now with the noise I explained above? I thought the same like it could be those tires noise but I gave it a shot with new rotor at rear left but it still does rotate with small play. That noise increases/synchronized with the speed and can be hear clearly at 45 to 60 mph or above. If my problem matches with the problem you had, I would go ahead and try to find resonable way to replace my rear left hub assembly.
Thanks.

symptoms you describe seem to match the problem i had...spinning the left rear wheel while up on a jack or jack stand should produce a grinding sound, this problem was discovered by my regular mechanic, then brought to the dealer for warranty repair...
Thanks nysmaxima !!
Yes when I rotate rear left tire on jack makes rubbing noise at one angle for one full 360 degree rotation. I am not sure should I call that as grinding noise though. I thought the rubbing noise is because of brake pads are rubbing on rotor at one perticular angle due to play in that hub. Waiting for money from uncle sam to get this fixed.
