extended warranty with a new Maxima?
Hello all! New to the site (my first post)...My wife and I recently purchased my mother's 04 SL (with Navi) from the Nissan as she went up to an Inifiniti (we paid less than 13K for a car with 30K miles)...Our experience with Victory Nissan in MD was so bad that we ended up purchasing the car from Infiniti. Basically, they did not want to make time to sell us the car. Infiniti sold us a warranty for last months prices @ 4 years/48k additional miles for $1300...This was an Infiniti Supreme Warranty (pretty much covers everything except the wear and tear components)...In fact, we can take the car to either Infiniti or Nissan to get serviced...
As a service manager for a DC/MD metro area dealer. I have to say YES. I have seen many people make out well having one. Another member on the 6thgen board just had his timing chain replaced and the month before his tranny. There are many after market companies that sell them and each dealer will sell that or the Nissan one. They range from about $700 up to a few thousand depending on the coverage you want. If you want more info feel free to PM me and I can direct you in the right direction.

I paid $1500 for my 2 year/24,000 mile extended warranty. Getting my starter replaced with a brand new Nissan OEM starter was about $700 (which I know is rediculous). So, that covered about half of what I paid for my extended warranty. Another 1 year/12,000 miles to go before it's up...

I already had an extended warranty to 4 years 100K KMS (60k miles) and just purchased my buy out on my lease as it was very low so I added an additional 3 years or 60K kms for about $1,300. Believe me as cars grow older this is definitly worth it as it also increases your chances of selling it used.
To answer question #1 of the OP, the answer is NO.
If you save all the money you would spend on warranties on cars, appliances, computers, etc,. etc. and bankroll the risk and self insure it, you will come out ahead in the long run. Dont forget to take high deductibles on your Comp. and Collision coverages also....another form of self-insurance.
I've been doing it for 35 years and estimate to have saved in excess of $25,000.
Sure, I got caught for a $950 collision bill on a car and had a few $600. or $700. mechanical repair bills on cars, but over the long run, I am way ahead.
If extended warranties are good for the warranty company, they are not good for the warranty buyer.

I completely agree with you. I've never bought a warranty just handed over to me at the contract signing. I always shop around and compare what I'm getting for the money. I've always ended up with a better warranty that covered more.
