So, I decided to change out my gf's in-cabin filter of her 98 lexus gs300. to her knowledge, it have NEVER been changed before! that's a good 11 years...
here's a pic...
the damn thing was starting to break down around the edges, and there was misc bones and crap stuck between the folds.

changed mine today for fear of the grim reaper nesting up in there... must say I'm not going to win the award though. I've got some leaves, dirt, seeds, misc crap like that...but no bones (I have a june bug...does that count? ). Didn't look that bad for as long as it's been in there and as many miles it has on it.
I'll have to post pics in a day or two. My wife has the camera at the hospital with her so I'll have to go get a memory card for this other one.

flow direction on aftermarket filter
Noooooooooooooooooo, it's easier to empty the glove box,
- close
- slide the 2 plastic pins out that are located under the glove box on the hing.
- open and you should have enough play you turn the glovebox in a 40-45 degree angle to get it out of the tracks and let it hang down on the wire.
- Look straight ahead where the glovebox was and you will see a rectangular access cover with 2 clips.
- Using a small flat tip screwdriver, unhook the clips
- Remove filter
- Verify proper direction and install new filter.
- reverse procedure to close everything back up!!!

it's kind of scary how many people simply forget to change their cabin filters. imagine all that crap they're breathing in once the filters exceed their usable life.

...it still sees enough drive time though...
I noticed here I change the Central HVAC filter more often than we did in rural MO.
