Considering buying 2005 SE
Good day All!
I have been driving my 1999 Max for 9 years now and I'm considering buying a 2005 3.5 SE maxima with 30K miles. My question is pretty simple, for those of you owning a 2005 Max, would you recommend it? I'm also interested in a 05 Altima 3.5 SE with a bit more mileage.
Any comment/suggestions is much appreciated!
Cheers

Hey guys, thanks for the quick answers. The one I'm looking at is an 05, 30K miles, 6 speed, leather, fully loaded for about 17,500$. That would be stretching my budget to the maximum as I was looking to spend about 15 or 16K. The Altima I'm looking at is an 05 as well, 5 spd, fully loaded with 45K miles for 13K$
U can talk them down on the 05. Its a year older, though the mileage is low(a plus) you could or should be able to get that out the door for 16,000. I was looking at a 04 a few weeks back, before wound getting a 06 for the same price the other dealer was trying to charge me for the 04.
Negotiate and keep looking too.
Are you bringing the money to the deal or you using their financing? A blank check talks, you have all the power then.

The max is a nicer car but the altima has so much aftermarket wupport it's almost a toss-up. only go altima if you are getting 07 or newer, that's when they look presentable in my opinion
plus you don't get banned

I have an '05 SE with the 6 speed. Also came into this one from a 4th gen. 5 speed I-30t. My SE also has leather, though it's not "supple" leather. It's stretched pretty tight and thin and is hard to the touch. Kind of like those stupid suede door panels.
As far as the driving experience, the 6th gen. is a let down from the 4th gen. The old 5 speed/3 liter/VLSD was such a great driving combo. Everything worked so great together. The '05's 6 speed/3.5 liter don't seem to go together as well and don't give the same fun driving experience, especially at lower speeds. The gearbox is clunky. (How could Nissan get this wrong? How they make it worse instead of better?) I tried to install a short throw shifter kit, but it didn't fit right in my particular model.
The only time I really love driving the 6 speed is between 45 and 85 mph on the freeway when you dropshift to bust past some slow poke. The big Max is really a nice touring car, and has a lot of room for adults. That's why I bought it over a G-35, and why it would be better than an Altima.
Maintenance has been no problem, though I did have that mysterious clutch-to-the-floor issue that had me limping home the last two miles after hours of hard driving in extreme heat. I changed the transmission fluid to DOT 4 and it never happened again. (If it ever happens to you, just stop the car for a few minutes and the pressure will come back to the clutch.)
