clutch

so, being that my maxima was my first manual car, ive abused the clutch pretty bad, finally its at the point where the clutch pedal engages after depressing it maybe 3 inches down, making it pretty much on/off engaged and its making my driving pretty harsh. also i took it up to 120 or so driving home from work, and i started to smell like a rotten egg smell..weird. im guessing its related cause its happened a few times since after i burned up the clutch driving like an idiot. anyone else had this happen?

basically, im wondering if anyones serviced the 6 speed tranny and knows what i need to replace so i can have the stiff clutch like i used to and how involved it is..im a mechanic but ive never really gotten into transmission work.

How is the pressure in the pedal?

well the pedal feels stiff all the way down but i think that it actually has a spring of some sort to keep it stiff..if that makes any sense. i just cant feel it engage any more..by the time i know that it catches like another inch and my foots off the pedal.

exhaust? really? strange..is it anything bad or is that 'normal' in a sense..i was thinking it was a possible fuel issue also..

yeah its not really slipping..that i can tell. how do you tell really i heard that you put it in high gear going slow...or something like that.

I was asking about the stiffness to eliminate the possibility of it being the master or slave cylinder. Sounds like we've done that if you've got a stiff pedal.

I'm no expert, but on our race bikes we test for slippage by going full throttle in 6th gear. If it doesn't accellerate well - its slipping. Don't know if the same applies to cars, but I would assume something similar would.

Or, while car is at a complete stop, engage parking brake and the regular brake, put her in 6th gear, and pop the clutch. The engine should stop immediately. If not, you have slippage.

I test the clutch by putting it in top gear at about 30 and floor the car. The engine should lug, but the rpms should not go up faster than the speed of the car, so to speak
