Cold Air Intakes

Cold Air Intakes
Hey everyone, hope the holidays are treating you well. Just wondering if there is a certain kind of cold air intake that you guys recommend. I am looking at getting one soon, but I want the most bang for my buck in these hard times. Any input would be great.

a home made FWI cheapest and highest HP...easy to do...
The FWI is so named because it uses a separate compartment, the fender well, the house the air filter. This set-up can be as simple as a PVC or steel tube extending from the throttle body to a hole in the side or bottom of the engine bay. Because the air filter is placed outside the engine bay, the car's own sheet metal serves to deflect heat from the intake/filter.
The FWI's chief advantage is the air being fed into the filter is near ambient temperature when the vehicle is moving. Another positive is the FWI uses a long, narrow tube, so intake air moves very quickly to the throttle body. Because of this the air doesn't have a chance to "heat sink" as much as with CAI designs, so the FWI may be made without the use of insulating material, giving it a more polished or OEM look. Finally, a FWI can be made of common PVC plumbing tube, or other plastic/silicone/metal tubes intended for intake fabrication. The cost and build difficulty can be kept relatively low compared to the CAI.

or any hardware store. just grab some PVC(white tube) and slap a filter on the end of it.

Pros/Cons....
Pro: Fujita = 1 piece piping
Con: Nismo = Multiple pieces coupled, NG.
The less couplings you have the better off you are, i.e. less chance for air to leak out anywhere.
Pro: Fujita = $189.00 SHIPPED TO YOUR DOOR.
Con: Nismo = $2??.?? shipped to your door.
Why pay more? For the Nismo name? Unh uh.
I know its only 2 comparisons right here but come on Fujita guys, need I say more??
I have the Wrinkled Black F5 and it has been nothing but awesome! (with the exception of broken vibra-mounts but the are easily replaced by Fujita if you email them)

So far I'm liking the idea of a Fujita with the great things you guys have said about them.

K & N drop in filter is a nice option if you want to stay with OEM filter housing and piping. Its been stated that you lose a little low end torque when you get a CAI but gain nicely up top. I can atest to that 1 lol
All in all...just get the F5. The black one will look great with your silver car and black wheels.

I wouldn't make one if I was you unless you are totally into doing that kind of thing.
I've had both the Nismo CAI and the Fujita. It's almost a toss up, I give the edge to the Fujita but the Nismo has the name. You can really lose going either way.
The only other one that I am looking at is the Weapon R, but so far no one that I know has put one of those on, so it's a unknown.

Here ya go. Not too terribly impressed with it. Looks way too short and what's going on with the filter? Looks cheesy and cheap. This one is for an 02-06 Altima/Maxima. List price is $152

Its in the group deal section of this forum as well. You dont have to go to 6thgenmaxima.org but you can. Or just go to the fujita website and when you order put in the maxima.org GD code which is located in that thread i mentioned first.

Yeah thanks. It sounds like a pretty good deal to me compared to the nismo cai.

He says that based on how much water/rain/puddles are in your area. If you are on the throttle and go through a large puddle with a CAI there is the potential of sucking up water and hydro-locking your motor. Not to worry though really, unless you totally floor it with this thing completely submerged in water you will be fine.

Just get the Mishimoto carbon fiber intake. The looks are worth it alone and it had a carbon heat shield so it draws in cold air. No risk of water induction and its easy to clean.

I think I'm one of the few on the 6th gen forum here who uses the Stillen CAI. As I haven't used any other intakes, my $0.02 is subjective, but anyway...I went with the Stillen just because of my personal preference of aluminum vs. that plastic polymer stuff from which the Fujita is built. I felt that the aluminum would hit harmonics more similar to a 350Z/G35coupe and I have been right thus far. I've been using the Stillen since about 40k miles (I now have 73k) and I don't regret a thing. However, as said before, the Fujita is less costly, it's one piece rather than 2, and it probably makes a similar harmonic noise to its metal (Stillen) counterpart. Both make that F1-style sound around 5700rpm as well (people might want you to keep it to a dull roar, lol). It's really up to you in the end, but I love my Stillen and wouldn't trade for anything exept a turbo hehe
