Does anyone know if the 5 spd AT Pan gasket is retourque-able or not? My Max is an 04. When I was researching changing out the transmission fluid, I saw several complaints that the aftermarket gaskets tended to leak. I have seen this complaint on other vehicles as well and some vehicles have pan gaskets that can be used a number of times. Even though there is a drain plug on this tranny, I want to clean out the pan of any garbage or gunk that may have collected there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

id never reuse a gasket.

 

There's no pan on the 5 speed.

 

i believe hes referring to a 5 speed automatic transmission and not the 6 speed manual.

never reuse the gaskets.

when installing new gasket, do not over torque it, thats usually why they leak soon after. Just tighten it by hand slightly.

like muyrec said there isn't a removable trans pan. its a part of the trans case.

a pic i tooked a couple months ago. its a sealed tranny. The bolt to drain the tranny oil is on the top left.

 

Damn, I haven't been underneath there yet and didn't realize there wasn't a pan. I feel sheepish. Thanks guys.

Btw, it is okay to retorque some sheet metal gaskets if they were made to. A good example is the pan gasket on my 06 Ford Expedition, which can be retorqued 6 times. As mentioned above, that is assuming they aren't over-torqued. Outside of the automotive industry, I have reused metal gaskets on hydrogen processing equipment in 2000+ psig service. The metal gasket yields and conforms to the mating surfaces when torqued in the proper order and to the correct magnitude.

 

It looks like the pan may be on the side of the tranny in the pic.

 

I've taken that "pan" off, It's a pain in the a$$ to get to the top bolts on there, but it can be done. I cleaned out the pan/inerts but I don't think it will do much for you since the drain plug is right there below it.
As for the gasket for that "pan", there isn't one. You use RTV or other similar hi-temp gasket maker to seal it.
