Rattle Fixed
Rattle Fixed
So I finally got my Maxima fixed. There was a terrible rattle under acceleration. My Check Engine light was also coming on quite frequently. It ended up being a catalyst failure. $760 just for the part! Yowsa!! Thankfully I purchased an extended warranty so it was covered. There were also a few exhaust brackets that were broken. That wasn't covered and cost me $140. After a 5 hour repair, it's fixed and everything sounds great! I'm just glad to finally be able to drive it and not hear that crazy sound from underneath!
Bro,
Make sure you sort out the mechanic....if you had a catalytic converter failure, it is due to your engine not running properly. That issue has to be corrected or you will just destroy your new converter.
"If the converter is plugged, contaminated, damaged or rusted out, it must be replaced. Likewise, if the OBD II system is showing low catalyst efficiency, the converter must be replaced. Replacing the catalytic converter will restore proper emissions performance. But a new converter will suffer the same fate as the old one if the underlying condition that caused the converter to fail has not been diagnosed and repaired. Look for fouled spark plugs or wires, low or no cylinder compression in one or more cylinders, or a computerized feedback system that stays in open loop all the time (sensors, bad oxygen sensors, etc.)."

My 04 has a rattle under hard acceleration... no check engine light or fault codes though, and rattle only occurs either when going for the redline, or up a good hill. Maybe just need some new clamps?? $700+ doesn't sound good to keep a 5 year old car in shape.
Well the catalyst failure wasn't due to the rattle although it could have played a role. While I agree that $700 is a lot for the part, that's how much it cost per the Nissan dealer in town. However, I didn't pay for that repair or part because it was covered under the emissions warranty and the other issues were covered under the extended warranty that I purchased.
I have the same issue in my J31 2005 maxima. A weird rattle noise mainly when going up slight incline at about 70+kms. I thought it was pinging and they did a carbon clean, but still making the rattling sound. Gonna take it to a mechanic to take a look at and mention the heat shield, but where is the heat shield, anyone got a picture of where abouts it is on the 05 maxima?
