5 Speed AT differences?

Ok, I know how to search, but this time I just can't quite find the answer I am looking for.

Somewhere I have read there is a difference in the 04 & 05-06 five speed auto transmissions that will not allow them to interchange. Car-part.com will only list the 2004 model as an interchange also. It must be something about the electronics, because I know it will physically bolt up to the engine.

Does anyone have any factual knowledge on this? Looking to replace a failing 04 trans with a newer one. Yes, I have heard & read all about the 5AT issues, but I am just hoping to get a few more years out of this car. Thanks.

rebuild the one you have. cost should be less and will work better. Check out Level 10 Performance. Nissan dealer would be the best place for the answer you are looking for because they can look up using your vin number to find available options. Replacing one failing transmission with another one that's going to fail is a failure in itself. Get the problem fixed, don't hide it by replacing it with another future problem. send your valve body to level 10 and have them rework it. If your tranny hasn't completely failed than you might still have hope. If it has failed, they have internal parts that are better than stock and you could have a professional install them for you.

Thanks, I appreciate the info, but I am still looking for someone with the knowledge of the differences between the two transmissions. Nissan dealers are no help; all they know are part numbers. When it comes to actual differences in hard parts they are lost.

Only thing that would be different would be the TCM and maybe the design might be different. As far as being able to bolt one up and have it work, you would have to talk with a trans specialist or Nissan. Ask them to tell you the part numbers for the trans that will fit. If they tell you more than one ask them to explain what that means. I would go in to Nissan and ask, they seem to work a little harder at telling you what you want to hear than doing it over the phone. Tell them what you are trying to do they should accomidate.

No, I currently have a failing 5 speed AT.

On further investigation, Nissan lists 2 different part numbers for their remanufactured transmission assemblies: one for 04, and one for 05-06.

So the question remains unanswered......

This rambling from a one time poster is all I have been able to find so far:

04 max tranny trouble
okay so im pretty fed up with my 04 max 5AT SE made in 2003. i need a new transmission and was told a 05 and 06 tranny will fit as long as you take the sensor out of the old tranny. turns out it dosent bolt up right so the place i took it too said they had a 06 with like 28,000 miles they would install for 1700 total, but yea i wanted to know is this true or can i still use an 06 or 05 tranny and this guy dosent know what to do. cuz a few people told me it would work. next thing i wanted to know is what did people do when they needed a new tranny and were out of warranty, did you guys replace it with a used one, a remanufactured one, or rebuilt one. i dont have a lot ot spend and was gonna put in a used one from 04 but how do you check to see if the the one ur buying isnt going to be defective, because it looks like the maximas built in 03 and early 04 all have a problem.

p.s. the dealer told me that later year 04's can use a 05 or 06 tranny but i dont think these later month ones will fit something in a 03 built one right? thanks guys!

p.s.s. if someone could call me with some advice or a place in socal that knows what theyre doing and has the part, anything at all really please call me 909 534 5856, thanks
