New 6th Gen owner

Hey guys,

So I'm getting ready to buy an 04 Max SE with nav, but have a few questions before I meet the seller. Some bit of details on the car, has rear spoiler, ~68k miles, sky view (eh), rear bench seats (it can seat 3 people in the rear), Bose, 6CD disc changer, leather, and heated seats.

1: How do I update the maps on the navigation unit? I've seen DVD update discs, but those were only for 2006+

2: Anything in particular I should look out for? I've read through the recalls, and TSB's, but didn't get much information on it.

3: What maintenance should I do after I buy it? Oil change, trans fluid flush, spark plugs? I'm not sure on the maintenance schedule for this generation.

4: Any suggestions on buying extended warranties? Where to and ~how much?

5: I want to do the LED in the door handle mod, on a black exterior car, what color would look good for the LEDs?

6: Anything else I should look for?

Any information would be very helpful for me... thanks!

1.) Don't know

2.) If you get an 04, get the manual transmission, DON'T get the automatic 4spd because a lot of them have issues.

3.) @ 68k, I say just do your regular schedule maintence, but check the your booklet to make sure.

4.) For extended warranties read this: http://www.6thgenmaxima.org/forums/v...t=7541&start=0

5.) IDK, its up to you, I personally don't care for them.

6.) Like I said, if you get an 04, get the manual, NOT the automatic. Just give it a test drive, feel for the shimmy problem and if you notice anything out of the ordinary. GOOD LUCK!

The '04 SE should have the 5sp auto... not as prone to break down as the 4sp on the SL. I just passed 52,000 on my '04 SE and my tranny is fine.

Go for a test drive, and listen for all the squeaks/clunks etc. See how bad the steering wheel shimmies from 40-60. Ask for maintenance records. If they don't have anything, I'd walk away. They should have at least something. Pay close attention to any excessive engine whine noise upon acceleration (could be the timing chain and tensioners... a costly repair)... also pay close attention as well to how the tranny shifts... you will know if something isn't right.

If you do decide to bring it home with you, change all the fluids right away just to be sure. Engine oil is up to you... tranny fluid... I would recommend Amsoil ATF fluid (It's Matic K compatible)... check the group buy section for talkinghorse's Amsoil thread. Great guy to deal with.

Good luck!

Thanks guys.
Can you explain on the steering wheel shimmies? As in, if the steering wheel is shaky from 40-60? It's a used car dealership, they'll give me a Carfax report; doubt if they'll have maintenance records.

you will LOVE the car bro!

all i can tell you is that i have never had any shimmy issues with mine since I got it (it was used as well)

I guess it all depends on how well you take care of your vehicle and how well it was taken care of in the past bud

Thanks man, I still don't really understand what you guys mean by "shimmy issues".

And a few lingering q's: how to update 04 nav, and what color LEDs for the door handles?

Hope everything goes smooth, going to take it for a test drive this weekend! It'll be a nice up from the 4th gen (233k miles!).

Thanks man. Wow, hopefully it won't have those issues..any idea if the warranty would cover it? A warranty that comes with from the dealership with purchase and going to buy extended warranty too.

I just passed 90K in my 04 SL 4spd, and my tranny is perfectly fine. I drive a lot to LA from San Diego for meets, shows, etc, and i never had issues with mine.

Not every 04 4spd will have issues, as long as the car is well maintained and clean. I don't mean exterior clean (that counts too), but mechanically clean.

good luck.
