Thermostat Assistance

So I have a faulty thermostat and am going to be replacing it this weekend and I am asking for some of the experts assistance.

First, what size are the three bolts that hold the thermostat housing to the engine? This will just make things a little smoother. Any recommended tools to complete the job?

Second, after reading the FSM it says to remove the drain plug from the engine, radiator and drain all fluid. Then, use a vaccuum pump type machine to make sure that you get all of the air out of the system when re-filling. I am not going to have this vacuum machine. What is the best way to get the job done without it, and without leaving air in the system?

I DON'T WANNA MESS UP MY WATER PUMP! Thanks for the help in advance!

Just drive it normally for a couple of days with the radiator cap slightly loosened. It will bleed the air out by itself.

Just in case someone has to complete this job in the near future, make sure you have swivel head socket adapters 2 of each size, and various extension sizes. This makes the job a piece of cake. Finished in under 2 hours. Good luck!

I'm thinking of doing this soon. Did you have to remove the belts or can it be done without having to remove them?

I know I am bumping an old thread here but I have replaced my thermostat and having all kinds of crap with it leaking once I put it back in place.

It's hard enough screwing the damn screws back in. I didn't use a "torque wrench". I did buy a gasket and thermostat sealant but maybe I am not using enough or should I use any at all!?

I used flexible socket extenders and then I also tightened them down by hand more.

I gave up and had the car to my mechanic. It turns out that the thermostat that I bought from the stealership had a crack in the housing. SMDH!!!!
