Hey Everyone, I just bought my 2004 Maxima, and I have noticed something very strange. at exactly 50mph, you will all of a sudden here a hum similar to when you drive off the edge of the highway and you hit those bumps made to let you know you are going over the edge, and I also feel a light vibration in the gas pedal whenever I hear this hum. And then once I hit 55-57mph it goes away. It only does it in that small 5-7 mph gap from 50-57. very strange, any ideas?

 

sounds like either the wheel bearing I know when I got my 2004 used I had to relaced the stock RSA tires it sound just like a bad wheel bearing how many miles?

 

only 55K miles.

 

I took it to Nissan. it is the front wheel bearing going out. just letting everyone know. if you swerve the car left it gets louder, if you swerve right, it gets quieter.

 

Dang... add another problem to my 06 then. I've had that vibration at around 40 mph since the day I bought the car.

 

if you take it to nissan, i was told it would run around 2 hours labor and the cost of the bearing is $50. if its the front wheel anyway. so roughly $200 total.

 

Had my wheel bearings checked by a guy at Discount Tire today and he said both are nice and tight, no play at all. I had them rebalance my tires and fill them to the proper pressure and the ride is as smooth as it was when I put the new tires on before I replaced the struts... the vibration is hardly noticeable at all now. Must've threw something off when I replaced the struts.

 

had both of my rear hub bearings removed about 50k... humming noise was so unbearable - even when i had my Greddy's on .. they were louder than my exhaust. Replaced it and now the exhaust just got louder!!! can't win either way... but same exact scenario turn to the right loud.. left not as loud... if you going to replace one might as well replace both. chances are the other one is about to go anyway.. in my case it was about there.. goodluck bud!

 

well mine is definitely the wheel bearing.

 

i thought about replacing both, but then its twice the cost on labor more then likely. only $42 for the bearing, not too bad, but the labor sucks.

 

I've had a similar noise growing worse for several months. Just had the car in for front end alignment, wheel balancing, and new brake pads/turned rotors. Noise is significantly better at all speeds EXCEPT 50 mph! Shop said the source of the noise was cupped tires- but they are not cupped, at least not that I can tell. (I think they wanted to sell me new tires- go figure!) I'll ride it for a while and see if there is any change. I'm suspecting the wheel bearings if it does not get better.

 

Mine vibrates or shakes at around 100 KM/hr... and if I pull up the e brake, I feel a vibration coming from the rear... wonder if it's my rear disks that are warped... and causing the steering vibration... and yes it does it weather i press the brakes or not.

 

I have a wierd noise while using the air conditioning?? any ideas?

 

I've had the same problem, humming sound beginning around 40mph or so. Had my 60K service done, so I am assuming it is not bearings as that is a checkpoint in the service. However, it occurs startin around 40mph and gets more noticeable up until around 75mph or so.

 

My passenger side rear hub bearing went out at around 80k miles, and it was an unbearable humming noise like I had monster snow tires. I didn't replace the drivers side, and I'm at 105k with no further issues.

 

I have a similar issue. I have a 2007 SE and it sounds like I am driving a large truck with huge monster tires. Only hear the noise when the car is moving and the faster the louder. If I am going 2 MPH I hear it and the faster the louder it is--much like big truck tires. Everything else seems fine. I just got the car but did not notice this before buying. Any thoughts?

 

Sorry to say I think its your bearing. I just replaced mine 2 weeks ago.

 

I just recently got my max out of the shop for that "hum" mine sounded almost like road noise from tires, but they got over 20000 miles on them so figured that couldnt be it, anyway the dealership found the right rear wheel bearing going out. R&R wheel bearing and no more noise.

 

thanks, what price ballpark am I looking at to have it replaced?

 

mine was done under warranty, but the way it looked on the paperwork it would have been in the $300.00 range give or take.

 

I paid $225 at a local garage. I am out of warranty and did not go to the dealer for it.

 

Not sure if this helps, but I had a similar issue. My steering wheel would have a subtle vibration when stopping and at speeds over 35mph. I took it into Meineke today and they showed me worn and cut tie rod ends on my front passenger side. After replacing the two rod ends, labor and an alignment to the tune of $216, the vibration is gone. Good luck...
