chrome wheel corrosion

Hey everyone, I have a set of Nissan chrome wheels, only 6 years old now, and one keeps leaking air about 2-3 lbs per day. nissan could not find the leak. took it to a tire place and they said the wheel has corrosion around the area where the tire seals so its leaking around the seal. they put some sort of goop on it which they said will fix it 70% of the time. well, it worked for about 4 days and now is leaking 2-3 lbs a day again. they said if that didnt work I would have to buy a new rim. my question is, couldnt it be sanded or something? anyone else have this issue fixed? I have not seen the corrosion to know how bad it is.

Don't take things too seriously here, bro. We take the **** out of each other all the time.

As for the rim, if it is corrosion, then spend the $$$, get it re-chromed, and be done with this silly issue.

yeah, not uncommon, ive seen it before.

it probably needs to be sand blasted and re plated. cant really sand and feather out chrome.

I have a full size rim on my spare tire on my SE. Use that and buy a steel rim for the spare.

Your best bet is either getting them re-chromed if you want that set, or pickup a set of aftermarket wheels. Check the wheel classifieds on here.

Mine are doing this too. The tire shop was able to do a little grinding around the air nossel hole and it fixed it, took 2 tries. I figure that I am good until next winter but the first salt will probably corrode them beyond grinding.

I am looking at new wheels now, tough choice, I don't really want to have to buy new tires so i am staying with 18's. I still have to drive this car in the winter and I don't think low pro 20's will cut it in the snow.

are you sure it's not a tire problem?

Buy a new set, its probably the same price as getting them rechromed, and new tires.

Rims

I have a 2005 Nissan Maxima and my rim did the same thing after putting new Michelin tires on - one kept losing about 4-5 lbs of air a day. Sams told me I had a crack in my rim so I took it to the Nissan dealership. They said a re-conditioned would cost more than a new rim $495.00 so it would be better to just get a new one. We brought it home and worked on the corrosion - no crack just corrosion. I'll let you know if this works and the tire seals without losing air.

If you sanded the chrome off the bead seat then you wont have any more corrosion issues as long as it hasn't pitted the surface enough to cause a leak. Wire wheels work great for this.
Its not the chrome itself that corrodes, its the chrome and metal surface its adhered to that reacts with oxygen when there is a gap in between the two surfaces that causes the issue. So get rid of one..then theres no remaining issue.
