What year is your car? I'm told that on the 04-06 that the step lights come on when you unlock the car. I have an 07, and my step lights DO NOT come on when you unlock the car, only when you open the door. The only lights that come on in my car when it is unlocked are the ignition ring light, and the dome lights. There is a yellow/green wire coming out of one of the plugs on your BCM...that is the signal wire that supplies voltage to the ignition ring light and causes it to light for 30 seconds when you unlock your car, or first turn off the ignition. I would be very careful about messing with wires on the BCM though...you may want to look over this post:
