Engine Noise/Timing Belt question!

Hello, I have gone through the countless threads regarding the engine issues and wanted to get some advice on my car.

I have a 2005 Maxima and lately started hearing the dreaded rattle noise. I took it the dealer yesterday and was told that it was the timing chains, tensioner, seals and guides. I was given the estimate of $1500 for all the work. Please help me decide how to proceed:

1) Is this a fair estimate for this type of work? Or do you think I can get a cheaper price from another nissan dealer? i don't want to go to any other mechanics for this kind of work.

2) For those people that did get issue repaired, how was your car after the work was done? is the noise gone? How is the pick up? Is the drive smooth afterwards?

3) Lastly, I wanted to know whether I should get the car repaired or just sell the car considering the costs involved to get this fixed.

Any help would greatly appreciated. Please help.

Thanks

I would look around. I ended up having a local mechanic do the repairs for me for $1100, labor $900 and parts $200. This mechanic used to work with Acuras and Infinitis so I trusted him. I didn't really have any performance issues with the car when I had the problem, just that annoying noise. I would keep the car unless you really wanted to get rid of it. It still has a good resale value.

Thanks Athlon,

Since I don't really know any local mechanics, would you still recommend going to local and shop around. I feel this kind of work can't be done by any regular joe shmoe.

I was thinking of selling only because the drive might not be great even if it gets fixed.

Has anyone else gotten this work done? How was your experience.

How many miles are on the car and does the noise happen all the time or on start up?

The car now has 84K Miles and noise is continuous. However, the decibel level fluctuates at times.

84K ? That's not to much. Typically the car you own is the cheapest car to drive, especially if you have it paid off. I haven'thad to get this work done yet, but when the time comes I will. I plan on keeping this one for a loooong time.

If you like the car keep it. All depends on what your needs are.

I had the same problem. i have an 06' with a Manual Transmission. It was covered under the warranty tho. Lucky me. I only had 37k when it happened. I consider that a defect on my car. The noise started around 30k, but the Tech at Lynnes Nissan in Bloomfied, NJ kept telling me that they didn't here the noise.

Good luck on getting a better deal. I know there has got to be a cheaper place than Nissan. They were trying to get me to pay $1700 for a new clutch I mentioned that my pedal was sticking & come to find out, it's the Sleeve cylinder & the Master Cylinder. Not covered by warranty after 36k. Love my car & found someone on here who hooked me up with a Great Mechanic in Newark, NJ who replaced both for less than 3/4 that price.

Mine has a slight noise on start up(only when its cold) but I will wait till the very end of my extended warranty before it expires to have it fixed. The noise goes away about 15 seconds after a cold start up then you don't hear it at all unless the car sits for more than 5 hours. And im at 61000 miles just had it in for a major 60000 service they said all was good with the car.

My car has that hhhhhsssss noise only on start-up also. When it warms up I don't even hear it anymore. I guess I gotta check it out in more detail what's going on.

Hey its Chris Terry from Nissan Chantilly and I am a service advisor. The Quote you got is legit cause I had the same work done on my car. The parts it self is around $100-$120. The killer is the labor cause thr tech has to take everything out and put it back.
Long story short, its a legit quote
